Tabu has spoken candidly about the pressures women face regarding ageing in the entertainment industry, saying society appears far more concerned about women’s age than women themselves are.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar India, the acclaimed actor reflected on how female actors are often judged more harshly for growing older and how public discussions around age are shaped largely by societal expectations and scrutiny.
Speaking about the constant attention women receive regarding ageing, Tabu said, “People are more worried about your age than you are yourself. They want to show you the mirror, as though you don’t have one at home.”
The actor explained that ageing is not a sudden transformation but something people experience gradually every day. According to her, society tends to dramatise the process unnecessarily, especially when it comes to women in the public eye.
“The person answering that question hasn’t aged overnight. We experience it every single day. It’s not like one day someone wakes up at 20 and the next day they turn 45,” she said.
Tabu’s remarks come amid wider conversations within the entertainment industry about beauty standards, ageism, and the pressure on female actors to maintain a youthful appearance throughout their careers.
Known for maintaining a grounded and private persona despite decades in the spotlight, Tabu also spoke about her honesty when rejecting film offers. She revealed that she was often advised not to disclose the real reasons behind turning down projects.
Recalling the advice she received from industry insiders, she said, “You should not give a real reason for not doing a film. Give the excuse of dates and walk away.”
However, the actor said she never understood the need to hide her opinion. “If I don’t like the script, I don’t like it. And I said so,” she added.
On the work front, Tabu was recently seen in Bhooth Bangla alongside Akshay Kumar. Directed by Priyadarshan, the horror-comedy released in theatres on April 17, 2026.
She is also set to reunite with Nagarjuna Akkineni for his milestone 100th film, tentatively titled King100. The two actors last shared screen space in Aavida Maa Aavide and Ninne Pelladata.
Directed by Naveen Karthik, the project officially went on floors earlier this year.
