Bollywood actor, cricket enthusiast, and co-owner and co-founder of the European T20 Premier League, Abhishek Bachchan has dismissed concerns regarding the growing number of T20 cricket leagues around the world, stating that quality and entertainment value will ultimately determine a tournament’s success.
Speaking about the expansion of franchise-based cricket tournaments globally, Bachchan said there is still room for leagues that offer strong cricketing standards and engaging experiences for fans.
“No, I don’t think so. At the end of the day, you have to be a quality product. Your tournament has to be worthy of your fans and has to give them the kind of entertainment that they wish,” he said.
The actor further emphasised that audiences today are driven by quality content and exciting gameplay, irrespective of how many leagues exist internationally.
“Your cricket quality is good, they’ll watch it,” he added.
Reflecting on the changing consumption habits of sports audiences, Bachchan admitted that while Test cricket remains the purest and most respected form of the game, the modern generation is increasingly gravitating toward shorter formats due to time constraints and changing lifestyles.
“And as a cricket fan, which format do you enjoy the most? Test, ODIs or T20? Well, currently I’m enjoying T20. I think time has become a great scarcity,” he shared.
Despite his admiration for the shortest format, Bachchan maintained that Test cricket still holds unmatched emotional and sporting value.
“But obviously, being a cricket fan, not much goes above Test cricket. That’s the purest form of the game,” he noted.
He also highlighted how the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket aligns perfectly with the mindset and entertainment preferences of younger audiences.
“But you have to keep in mind that the current generation doesn’t really like to spend that kind of time. So, T20 is very, very exciting. I think it’s a brilliant format,” he concluded.
The European T20 Premier League is among the latest additions to the growing global cricket ecosystem, reflecting the continued worldwide popularity of franchise-based T20 competitions.
