Muddasachem Fest brings heritage, culture and community together in Sanguem on International Workers’ Day

Sanguem came alive with colour, music and a deep sense of community as it hosted the vibrant Muddasachem Fest on International Workers’ Day, marking the beginning of the holiday season with a celebration rooted in culture and heritage.

Curated by Dr Gwendolyn de Ornelas, the festival — inspired by the idea that “Mudaça means change, relaxation, plan of change” — was hosted by Francis Barneto and supported by Clube Marius Festacar.

The day began with Barneto welcoming visitors into his personal heritage space, where an impressive collection of vintage artefacts, including traditional pottery and glassware, offered a glimpse into Goa’s material history. This intimate setting set the tone for a day centred on memory, identity and preservation.

Participants were then guided on a Pasoi (heritage walk) through the village, where Barneto shared insights on indigenous plants and trees, connecting attendees with the region’s ecological wealth. The walk brought together cultural enthusiasts such as Miguel Braganza, Marius Fernandes, Maria Goretti Fernandes and Prakash Kamat, encouraging dialogue and shared learning.

A major highlight of the festival was “Bolcãoacheo Gõzalli”, an intergenerational conversation moderated by Dr. Ornelas. The session explored Goan identity, traditions and the importance of oral histories, with Barneto reflecting on his childhood, his passion for collecting and his vision for preserving heritage for future generations.

The celebration also featured an authentic Goan meal, bringing participants together over local favourites such as rice, ladyfinger curry, fried fish and seasonal vegetables — a reminder of the region’s rich culinary traditions.

Senior journalist Prakash Kamat noted that the festival serves as both a celebration and a learning experience, especially for younger generations seeking to connect with their roots.

Muddasachem Fest highlighted the importance of safeguarding Goa’s cultural and ecological heritage while inspiring youth engagement. With strong community participation and meaningful programming, it is poised to become a significant addition to Goa’s cultural calendar.
