The historic plateau of Mardan Gadh came alive with devotion and hymns on Sunday, May 3, 2026, as hundreds of devotees from Santa Cruz and across Goa gathered to celebrate the annual feast of the Holy Cross.
The celebration reflected a deep sense of spirituality and community harmony, drawing pilgrims to a site that holds both religious significance and a rich historical legacy.
The feast mass was concelebrated by Fr. Clanny Fernandes, who served as the main celebrant, alongside Fr. Francis Rosario and Fr. Hemant. In his homily, Fr. Fernandes highlighted the enduring strength of faith and described the Holy Cross as a symbol of hope, healing and resilience.
Perched atop the remnants of an 18th-century fort, the Holy Cross at Mardan Gadh stands as a powerful reminder of Goa’s turbulent past. The site is historically linked to the Battle of Ponda, a fierce conflict fought between Maratha and Portuguese forces on June 28, 1756. Over time, what was once a battlefield has transformed into a place of pilgrimage, with many devotees believing in the miraculous intercession associated with the Holy Cross.
The feast also reflected Goa’s inclusive social fabric, with participation from people across communities and political representatives. Among those present were Ketan Bhatikar and Vishwanath Dalvi, along with several prominent citizens and devotees from neighbouring talukas.
As the day progressed, pilgrims remained atop the hill, engaging in prayer, reflection and fellowship. The celebrations concluded with traditional gaiety, continuing a centuries-old tradition that seamlessly bridges Goa’s historic past with its vibrant present.
