Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh’s ambitious historical film Raja Shivaji has become one of the most talked-about projects ahead of its release, but the recently released trailer has also invited criticism from some viewers over concerns related to historical accuracy.
The film, which is helmed, written, produced, and headlined by Riteish Deshmukh, is based on the life and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. The grand historical drama has generated significant buzz due to its scale, star cast, and emotional storytelling.
However, shortly after the trailer dropped, a section of social media users raised concerns about one particular scene involving the famous Wagh Nakh incident with Afzal Khan.
One X user shared a clip from the trailer and wrote that the film allegedly showed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj openly displaying the Wagh Nakh before attacking Afzal Khan. The user pointed out that historically, the weapon was concealed and used only after Afzal Khan attacked first.
The post read:
“The trailer of Riteish Deshmukh’s film shows Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj openly displaying the Wagh Nakh to Afzal Khan before the attack. It is historical fact that Wagh Nakh was concealed.”
Another user questioned the portrayal and accused the makers of altering history.
Responding to the criticism, Riteish Deshmukh maintained a composed tone and urged audiences not to jump to conclusions based on trailer footage alone.
Replying to one of the posts on X, Riteish wrote:
“Respected Sir, please do watch the film on 1st May. The answer to your question is there in the movie. I hope you enjoy the film with your friends and family. Jai Shivrai.”
His response has since gone viral, with many praising him for handling the criticism respectfully.
Raja Shivaji marks one of Riteish Deshmukh’s most ambitious projects in his nearly 25-year career. The actor enjoys a strong fan base in both Hindi and Marathi cinema and has delivered several successful Marathi films over the years.
The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Genelia Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Boman Irani, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, and Amol Gupte.
The film is scheduled to release in theatres on May 1, 2026.
