IMA Bicholim & Sangath Mark World Autism Acceptance Month with Powerful Call for Inclusion

In a heartfelt celebration of inclusion and empathy, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bicholim Branch, in collaboration with Sangath, observed World Autism Acceptance Month at Hirabai Zantye Hall in Bicholim on April 15, 2026. The programme reflected the IMA Goa State theme for the year, “Embracing neurodiversity: Together we care, connect, champion,” and brought together healthcare professionals, educators, students, and community members in a shared commitment to awareness and inclusion.

The event was held under the leadership of Dr. Shekhar Salkar, President of IMA Bicholim Branch, and in the presence of Chief Guest Premendra Shet. Addressing the gathering, he emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in supporting children with developmental conditions and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening support systems for families.

A key highlight of the programme was the presentation by Dr. Anup Netravalkar, Senior Programme Coordinator at Sangath, who introduced the “NAMASTE” programme—an initiative designed to support children with developmental delays, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. He spoke about empowering caregivers with practical tools and knowledge, enabling them to play an active role in their children’s development. His session also addressed common myths surrounding autism, while highlighting the importance of early identification and timely intervention.

The emotional core of the event was a moving street play performed by the NAMASTE team, which portrayed the daily challenges and triumphs of caregivers. The performance struck a chord with the audience, fostering empathy and deeper understanding of the lived experiences of families navigating developmental conditions.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from National Service Scheme (NSS) students of Shri Shantadurga High School, along with teachers, staff members from local institutions, representatives from Bicholim Police Station, and members of the community. Their presence underscored the importance of a united, multi-sectoral approach in promoting awareness and acceptance.

Also present were Dr. Medha Salkar, State Programme Officer and Chief Medical Officer under the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment, Directorate of Health Services, Government of Goa, and Mr. Sagar Shetye of Keshav Seva Sadhana, reflecting a strong spirit of collaboration across sectors.

The event concluded on a note of collective resolve, reinforcing the message that embracing neurodiversity is not just a medical or social responsibility, but a shared human commitment to building a more inclusive and compassionate society.
