On her birthday, we celebrate the remarkable journey of Maria Murena Miranda, an educator whose dedication has transformed lives in the remote village of Morpirla in Quepem taluka. As the Headmistress of Government High School (GHS), Morpirla, she has been a driving force behind empowering tribal students and nurturing first-generation learners through education.
With an MSc and BEd qualification and over 36 years of teaching experience, she has taught Mathematics and Science across institutions such as Guardian Angel High School Curchorem, Dr. T.B. Cunha Higher Secondary Panjim, Government Higher Secondary Canacona, and Multi Purpose Higher Secondary Canacona, before taking on her leadership role at Morpirla.
When she first joined the school, she recognised the eagerness among students to learn despite limited resources. Many students come from tribal backgrounds and rely entirely on school education without access to coaching classes. Under her guidance, the school has achieved 100 percent SSC results consistently for the past ten years—an extraordinary milestone that reflects both academic excellence and strong mentorship.
Her efforts have also opened doors beyond the classroom. Under her leadership, Master Gangesh Velip was selected for the Sakura Science Program in Japan. She also attended Republic Day celebrations in Delhi along with student Nandini Velip and participated in Pariksha Pe Charcha in 2023 and 2025, representing her school at national platforms.
Her contributions have been widely recognised. She received the National Award for Teachers in 2022 and the Goa State Best Teacher Award in 2020 in the Headmistress category. She was also invited to attend the At Home Reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan hosted by the Honourable President of India on Independence Day 2024.
As she celebrates her birthday today, her journey stands as a powerful reminder of the impact one dedicated educator can create. Her work continues to inspire not only her students but also the larger community, proving that education can transform even the most remote corners into centres of excellence.
