The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has revised the Class 9 English syllabus, significantly reducing the number of prescribed textbooks and lessons for students.
Under the new revision, the syllabus will now include only one textbook instead of two, and the number of texts has been reduced from 29 to 16. The move is aimed at streamlining the curriculum and reducing the academic load on students.
Earlier, Class 9 students studied English through two textbooks โ Beehive and Moments, which together included a wide range of prose and poetry pieces. With the latest changes, several chapters have been removed, leaving a shorter and more focused selection of lessons.
Education officials say the revision is part of a broader effort to simplify school curricula and make learning more manageable for students, while still maintaining key language and literary skills.
The update has sparked discussions among educators and parents, with some welcoming the reduced academic burden, while others have raised concerns about the impact on studentsโ exposure to diverse literature.
The revised syllabus is expected to be implemented in the upcoming academic session.
