Written by Tanisha Cardozo || Team Allycaral

The Lions Club of Navelim marked a significant step toward environmental responsibility with a successful e-waste collection drive held at Rosary Church, Navelim. The initiative, led by MJF Lion Joseph D’Costa, District Coordinator for E-Waste Collection Awareness, received an enthusiastic response from parishioners who turned up in large numbers to deposit their discarded electronic items.

Supported by MJF Lion Trevor Mascarenhas and other dedicated Lions members, the drive aimed to promote responsible disposal and recycling of electronic waste, a growing concern in modern households. The event saw participation and encouragement from prominent Lions officials including District Governor Lion JaiAmol Naik, DCS Lion Kirti Naik, PDG Lion Sasindran Nair, Region Chairperson Lion Dharmu Raut Desai, and Parish Priest Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, who lauded the initiative for its positive environmental impact and community engagement.

The collected e-waste comprised a wide range of items such as computers, printers, TV sets, music systems, mobile phones, and UPS units. All the materials were responsibly handed over to a government-approved waste collection agency for safe and compliant recycling.

The drive not only reduced the local electronic waste burden but also raised awareness about the importance of sustainable waste management and recycling. It reflected the Lions Club’s ongoing commitment to community service and environmental conservation, setting a strong example for other regions in Goa to follow.

Agriculture Students Champion Vermicomposting for Greener Goa in Chorão

Agriculture students from Goa took a significant step toward promoting sustainable farming practices by organizing a live vermicomposting demonstration for local farmers in Chorão village. The initiative was part of their RAWE (Rural Agricultural Work Experience) programme, a key component of agricultural education that connects classroom learning with practical fieldwork.

The demonstration showcased the process of vermicomposting — the use of earthworms to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich compost. Farmers were introduced to simple, cost-effective methods of setting up and maintaining composting systems on their farms, highlighting the benefits of improved soil health, reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers, and enhanced crop yields.

The event emphasized the importance of waste-to-resource conversion, not just as an environmental necessity but also as an economically viable solution for rural farming communities. Students took the lead in educating farmers on how agricultural and kitchen waste could be transformed into valuable compost, fostering a circular economy at the grassroots level.

This hands-on initiative reflects a growing awareness among the youth of the need for eco-conscious agricultural practices. By empowering farmers with knowledge and practical skills, the program contributes to Goa’s larger mission of fostering greener, more sustainable farming across the state. The success of the demonstration in Chorão stands as a model for future collaborations between educational institutions and local communities.

Written by Intern Queeny George M.H , Team Allycaral

The Partner Technology Event hosted by the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) in Panaji received strong support on Friday with the presence of Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant. The event served as a platform for showcasing emerging advancements in clean energy, such as solar energy, biofuels, battery regeneration, and cutting-edge wastewater management solutions.

Dr Sawant emphasized Goa’s commitment to sustainable energy goals and pointed to initiatives like the BiofuelCircle portal, rooftop solar programs, and the PM Surya Ghar Yojana as examples of progress. “Goa is moving ahead with initiatives like the ‘BiofuelCircle’ portal, rooftop solar, PM Surya Ghar Yojana, and other initiatives,” said Dr Sawant during his address.

The event was not just about clean energy but also about how industries across the board can adapt to technological advancements. From raw material sourcing to ownership patterns (private, public, joint, or cooperative), industries are being urged to align with evolving technologies and sustainability goals to remain competitive and future-ready.

One of the significant topics discussed was the critical role of waste management and how advanced technology can help tackle issues such as toxic plastic waste. “Waste management can be helped with the advanced technology and how it can be useful in depletion of ‘Toxic plastic’ and a ‘Clean environment’ to save the water bodies and biodiversity,” Dr Sawant said.

This initiative ties into India’s broader climate and sustainability roadmap, including its target to achieve major clean energy milestones by 2030. The GEDA event is a strong step in reinforcing Goa’s alignment with that national mission, showcasing how localized efforts can contribute to a greener, cleaner India.
