Master Piece by Michaelangelo – The Our Lady of Piety Statue
Hello My Allys,
It is Friday, the best time of the week! I am all excited as the weekend is around the Corner and Well, here I am all set to bring before you a memory of my previous trip to Rome. Thisย trip was indeed a very special one as it was my first ever trip to Europe!
The best part about travelling is that the entire experience turns you from a traveler to a storyteller. And the reason why I started the blog was I had so much to share about travel, social media and self care. Initially, have only started with travel, will soon grow this blog into social media and self care post too. So Stay Tuned! I have a lot to share.
This week, I thought of featuring, one of Michaelangelo’s finest piece of art – the Our lady of Piety statue which is situated in the beautiful St Peterโs Basilica, Vatican City. The finest sculpture referred to as Pieta is one of a kind statue designed of it’s time. This indeed launched Michaelangelo’s career making him successful and famous than the work he did previously.

Taking a closer look at the history, as to why this statue was sculpted. Well, it was way back in 1497 when a cardinal Jean de Billheres commissioned Michaelangelo to create a sculpture that would be placed in the side of the chapel in Rome, which later went on to become world famous and shifted to the St Peterโs Basilica, Vatican City. When Michaelangelo was assigned to create this sculpture, he was given instructions to create “the most beautiful work of marble in Rome, one that no living artist could better.”
Well keeping in mind that, he went on to create this marble sculpture of โ Pieta, well it has several wow factors attached to it.
The sculpture of Pieta as it isย fondly referred to as, depicts the tragic moment of the Virgin Mary holding her son in her arms after Jesus was brought down from the cross. And considering the fact that we are already in the Lent Season, I thought this would be one fine post to share insights about this beautiful sculpture!
Initially the Sculpture was housed at the chapel of Santa Petronilla which was later shifted to the place where it is housed now, towards the right as one enters the St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City.
If one takes a closer look at the sculpture, the statue shows Mary filled with Piety holding her son on her lap, post the Crucifixion. The Crucifixion is signified considering the marks of nails indicating wounds on Jesus’s hands.
Even though his sculpture came under several criticism, some to name where that the sculpture showed Mary Younger in age something around 33 while she was round 50 years of age at that time. Michaelangelo gracefully accepted them all. And today, everyone regards him as world famous for his this piece of art.
DID YOU KNOW?
- The sculpture took less than two year to complete.
- The marble used to carve this sculpture was Carrara marble, one of the favorite of the sculptors back then in the ancient Rome.
- This is the only artwork of his which he had ever signed.
Tip of the Day
I know this tip of the day would be off the track , but it is very important for us to understand and learn from this. The message is to always listen to criticism gracefully and at the same time let your work speak for yourself.
On that note, here it my time to say Good Bye only from this post! I hope to see you shortly with my next feature post. Do like, comment, share about this post to your Friends and Family Gratitude Always!

Switzerland Salutes Veteran Indian Director Yash Chopra
Hello My Allys,
I’m back this week with another #BeingAllycaralFridayFeatureย ๐ย This week, I thought of sharing with you a memory of Switzerland. A Place which instantly bringsย a smile on our faces. It is true, many of us might have not been to Switzerland or some of us have gone there. But I am sure, each of us atleast once in our lifetime visited Switzerland through movies. Switzerland is a home to many hollywood movies to name a few would be Angels and the demons (2009), Star Wars episode III : Revenge of the Sith (2005), Golden Eye (1995) and also Bollywood movies like Dhoom 3 (2013), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)ย The most famous movie of our times, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).
So more or less looking at these and many of the innumerable movies which we have seen shot in Switzerland, we definately have an idea of howย Switzerland actually looks. Keeping the same vision in mind, when I first traveled to Switzerland, I had the notion I would land on a road covered with ice but well, that wasn’t the story. I landed on a normal grey road!!!
My holiday was in planned in August so to actually get the snowfall during the time I was there was difficult. The season of winter was almost over, but none the less thankfully some places are always covered with snow throughout the year. So that didn’t disappoint me.

The place is world famous for two major things one is swiss chocolates & second swiss watches. While, I was going through sightseeing sights in Switzerland, I came across this place called Interlaken, a beautiful place situated right below a hill. As I was exploring this place, I came across a familiar fountain. And well, this wasn’t an ordinary fountain, this was the famous fountain which was seen in the iconic, Yash Chopra’s Movie of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). This spot is fondly referred to as the DDLJ spot. It was here that the characters of Raj (Played by Mr. Shahrukh Khan) was seen proposing his lady love Simran (Played by Mrs. Kajol) with a rose which she accepted and all what happened was the water from the rose spilled on her face.

While exploring this area on foot, next I came across a Life Size Statue of Veteran Film Director, Late Yash Chopra. Yes, indeed it was a very proud moment to see a statue of an Indian on a foreign land, so much loved and respected for. After Interacting with officials in the place, I got to learn that the statue was installed by the Swiss Tourism board in the year 2006, to acknowledge the Veteran Director, Late Yash Chopra’s contribution towards single-handily boosting popularity of Switzerland among the Indian Tourist – Indeed, Boosting Swiss Tourism as a whole.
It is simple, You get a car drop up to a single point then you have to explore the place on foot. The place is called the Kurssaal Garden in the central Swiss town of Interlaken.
DID YOU KNOW?
- The Statue is 350 Kg and is a replica of the one in Chopra’s film Studio in Mumbai.
- The Statue was installed in the year 2006.
- The same was unveiled by his wife, Pamela Chopra and daughter in law – actress Rani Mukerji.
- This is one of it’s kind statue in Switzerland in the open space dedicated to a film director who boosted Swiss Tourism.
TIP OF THE DAY:
- If you plan to visit Switzerland to experience Snowfall visit it in between December to April.
- Don’t forget to wear comfortable walking shoes as the same is explored best by foot.
