Govt College Khandola Students Experience Sustainable Farming Firsthand at Tato’s Kulaghar

July 31, 2025: As part of the TY VET paper on Environment and Sustainable Development, the Department of Political Science at Government College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Khandola organized an insightful and hands-on study visit to Tato’s Kulaghar, Chodan.

Led by Prof. Dr. Seema P. Salgaonkar (Vice Principal and HOD) and Mr. Akbar Gaded (Assistant Professor), the field visit involved 30 enthusiastic students eager to understand sustainability in action.

Experiencing Sustainability Beyond the Classroom

Students got directly involved in:

  • 🌱 Weeding and planting paddy saplings, learning the physical demands and environmental benefits of traditional farming.
  • 🍲 Sampling local Goan staples like pej (rice gruel), tor (cooked pulses), and traditional chillies — nourishing and culturally rich.
  • 🛁 Participating in a playful yet grounding mud bath near the sluice gate, a rural rite of connection with the land.

The immersive experience bridged textbook knowledge with lived practice, deepening students’ appreciation of ecological balance, rural livelihoods, and local food systems.

“This visit allowed students to connect meaningfully with sustainable development — not just as a theory but as a way of life,” said Prof. Dr. Seema Salgaonkar.

From soil to table, and sweat to smiles, this visit planted the seeds of awareness and environmental responsibility in the minds of Goa’s future changemakers.

Sowing Seeds of Knowledge: PM SHRI GHS Morpirla Empowers Students Through Agro Drive

In a commendable step toward experiential learning, PM SHRI GHS Morpirla conducted an impactful Agro Drive that connected students directly with nature and the agricultural roots of their community. Held on the school’s premises and nearby farmlands, the event provided a practical introduction to farming, food production, and environmental responsibility.

Learning Through Doing
Rather than just reading about agriculture in textbooks, students got a hands-on opportunity to engage in real agricultural activities — from preparing the soil and planting seeds to learning how to tend to crops responsibly. They experienced firsthand the physical labor and patience required to grow food, which cultivated both appreciation and awareness.

Farming with a Purpose
The drive also introduced the students to sustainable farming practices such as composting, organic pest control, and water conservation methods. Teachers and local experts explained how these methods support both the environment and long-term food security. It was a clear reminder that agriculture and sustainability go hand-in-hand.

Lessons That Stay Rooted
Beyond the practical knowledge, the Agro Drive fostered values like teamwork, respect for nature, and discipline. Many students shared that the experience changed their perspective on food and the work of farmers. They left with not just muddy hands but minds filled with valuable insights.

An Ongoing Commitment
PM SHRI GHS Morpirla’s Agro Drive is part of a broader effort to integrate life skills and real-world awareness into the education system. By introducing such meaningful initiatives, the school is sowing the seeds of a generation that’s not only academically equipped but also environmentally conscious and socially responsible.

The success of this drive is a testament to the power of field-based learning — turning students into stewards of sustainability, one seed at a time.

Celebrating World Pulses Day: Unlocking the Power of Pulses for a Sustainable Future

Written by Intern Joysi Yadav, Team Allycaral

February 10th marks World Pulses Day, a global celebration of the importance of pulses in promoting health, environmental sustainability, and food security. The United Nations General Assembly designated this day to highlight the holistic role pulses play in achieving nutritional, health, and environmental balance.

The Nutritional Powerhouse of Pulses

Pulses, also known as legumes, are edible seeds of leguminous plants, including chickpeas, beans, lentils, peas, and soybeans. These superfoods are rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals like iron, zinc, and potassium, making them a vital source of food for a balanced diet.

Benefits of Pulses

The benefits of pulses extend far beyond their nutritional value. They:

  1. Promote Sustainable Agriculture: Pulses improve soil fertility by fixing nitrogen and reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and damage to the soil.
  2. Support Climate Resilience: Pulses require less water and have a low carbon footprint, making them an eco-friendly crop.
  3. Ensure Food Security: Pulses are affordable and accessible, playing a crucial role in addressing global hunger.

Theme for 2025: “Pulses: Bringing Diversity to Agrifood Systems”

This year’s theme underlines the pivotal role of pulses in promoting diversity, nourishing our bodies, and protecting the environment. By incorporating pulses into our diets, we can facilitate a sustainable and nutritious future.

Join the Celebration!

On World Pulses Day, let’s come together to celebrate the power of pulses and promote their benefits. Share your favorite pulse-based recipes, learn more about the importance of pulses, and support sustainable agriculture practices.

Together, we can unlock the potential of pulses to create a healthier, more sustainable food system for all.
