Cinema from Northeast India Shines at IFFI 2025 with Powerful Lineup from Assam, Manipur, and Sikkim

Written by Tanisha Cardozo, Team Allycaral

Cinema from Northeast India is set to make a strong impression at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa, with a remarkable lineup of films from Assam, Manipur, and Sikkim featured in the Indian Panorama section. The festival, scheduled from November 20 to 28, 2025, continues to serve as a vibrant showcase of Indian creativity, cultural diversity, and cinematic excellence.

The Indian Panorama, a flagship component of IFFI since 1978, is devoted to promoting Indian films that represent the best of the countryโ€™s creative spirit and cultural heritage. This yearโ€™s selection highlights the Northeastโ€™s cinematic growth and the regionโ€™s distinctive storytelling tradition that blends realism, identity, and emotion.

In the Feature Film category, Assam and Manipur have made a powerful mark. Bhaimon Da (Assamese), directed by Sasanka Samir and produced by Zeal Creations, tells the inspiring story of celebrated Assamese filmmaker Munin Barua, exploring his life and the challenges faced by Assamese cinema across decades. The film is both a tribute and a chronicle of artistic perseverance.

From Manipur, Naorem Dinesh Singhโ€™s Oitharei continues the stateโ€™s legacy of socially conscious cinema. The film tells the story of a widow displaced by the ethnic unrest in Manipur since 2023, offering a poignant portrayal of grief, survival, and the quest for peace. Produced under Oitharei, it reflects the emotional depth that has long defined Manipuri filmmaking, echoing the work of masters like Aribam Syam Sharma.

Adding to Assamโ€™s prominence is Sikaar, directed by Debangkar Borgohain and produced by Mitra Bhattacharya, which has been selected for the Mainstream Cinema section. Starring Zubeen Garg, Urmila Mahanta, and Adil Hussain, the film is being hailed for its high production values, compelling narrative, and status as the most expensive Assamese film ever made. Sikaar symbolizes a new era of ambition for Assamese cinema, blending regional storytelling with national appeal.

The regionโ€™s strength also extends to the Non-Feature Film category. Assamโ€™s Patralekha, directed by Namrata Datta, explores themes of identity and communication through a poetic lens. From Manipur, Battlefield by Borun Thokchom captures the stark realities of life in a conflict-torn state with documentary precision and emotional power.

From Sikkim, Samten Bhutiaโ€™s Shangrila, produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), provides a rare window into Sikkimese culture and creativity. The Sikkimese-language documentary expands the cinematic map of the Northeast, celebrating the regionโ€™s evolving artistic identity and contribution to Indian cinema.

On November 27, IFFI will host a special discussion titled โ€œNew North East Cinema and Film Schools.โ€ The session will examine the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers from Indian film schools, particularly from the Northeast, and how these institutions nurture unique voices that bring fresh perspectives to national cinema. The dialogue will explore how these directors are reshaping Indian storytelling through authenticity, experimentation, and regional identity.

The inclusion of films from Assam, Manipur, and Sikkim at IFFI 2025 reflects the growing prominence of the Northeast as a cinematic powerhouse. With stories rooted in culture, resilience, and human emotion, the region continues to redefine the contours of Indian filmmaking โ€” asserting that powerful narratives often emerge from the countryโ€™s most diverse corners.

Sesa Football Academyโ€™s Aaroshi Govekar Poised for National Team Debut Against Nepal

In a proud moment for Goa and Sesa Football Academy (SFA), talented defender Aaroshi Ramdas Govekar has been called up to the Indian Senior Womenโ€™s Football Team for the one-off friendly against Nepal, to be held on October 29, 2025, at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok, Sikkim.

This match, Indiaโ€™s first-ever international fixture in Sikkim, is part of the celebrations marking 50 years of Sikkimโ€™s statehood. The event not only highlights the growing prominence of womenโ€™s football in India but also showcases the increasing representation of Goan players on the national stage.

Aaroshi, hailing from Nerul, Goa, has been a standout performer since joining Sesa Football Academy in 2018. Her consistent defensive displays in the Vedanta Womenโ€™s League earned her the โ€˜Best Defenderโ€™ award in the 2024โ€“25 season, while she also helped the SFA Womenโ€™s Team lift the Championship title. She represented Goa at the Senior Nationals in 2024 and 2025, proving her mettle at the highest state level.

Her football journey began humblyโ€”playing with village boys out of curiosity and determinationโ€”before progressing to represent clubs like Bengaluru FC, Calangute Association, and Puneri Warriors FC. Her growth reflects years of discipline, training, and an unwavering love for the game.

Speaking on her selection, Aaroshi said, โ€œItโ€™s a dream come true to wear the Indian jersey. This moment is not just a personal achievement but the result of years of dedication, passion, and hard work. Iโ€™m deeply grateful to Sesa Football Academy, my teammates, and my family for their support. Iโ€™ll give more than my best to make the country and Goa proud.โ€

She also expressed gratitude to the SFA coaching staff, crediting them for shaping her tactical awareness and physical development.

Mr. Gavin Araujo, Technical Director at Sesa Football Academy, shared, โ€œWe are extremely proud of Aaroshiโ€™s selection to the National Camp, which embodies the values Sesa Football Academy stands for โ€” perseverance, discipline, and excellence. With more Goan women now making it to the national level, the future of womenโ€™s football in the State looks promising.โ€

Aaroshiโ€™s selection follows that of another SFA star, Pearl Fernandes, who recently represented India at the SAFF U-17 Womenโ€™s Championship in Bhutan, helping the team clinch the title and qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2026.

From local fields in Goa to the international stage, Aaroshiโ€™s journey is a reflection of Goaโ€™s growing impact on Indian womenโ€™s football โ€” and a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes across the state.

Sikkim: The Only Indian State Where Natives Can Earn Crores Tax-Free

As the rest of India gears up for the FY25 Income Tax Return (ITR) filing season, the small Himalayan state of Sikkim quietly stands apartโ€”home to a rare legal privilege no other Indian state enjoys. In Sikkim, certain native residents are completely exempt from paying central income tax, regardless of how much they earn. Whether itโ€™s from salaries, businesses, capital gains, or high-yield investments, qualifying individuals in Sikkim can legally earn crores and pay absolutely nothing in income tax.

This extraordinary benefit is rooted in the historical and constitutional fabric of India. When Sikkim merged with the Indian Union in 1975, a unique provision was introduced to protect the regionโ€™s legal and administrative autonomy. Article 371(F) of the Indian Constitution was enacted, ensuring that Sikkim’s existing laws, including tax laws, remained in force unless specifically repealed or amended by Parliament. Alongside this, Section 10(26AAA) of the Income Tax Act was introduced, explicitly stating that income earned by Sikkimese individualsโ€”registered under the Sikkim Subjects Regulation of 1961โ€”would be exempt from central taxation.

But this exemption isnโ€™t universal across Sikkimโ€™s population. To qualify, individuals must be recognized as โ€œSikkim Subjectsโ€โ€”their names (or their ancestors’) must appear in official registers created before the stateโ€™s merger in 1975. Migrants or those who became residents later are not eligible. Those who do qualify, however, enjoy full income tax immunity, even if their earnings run into crores.

This exemption has been in place for nearly 50 years, making Sikkim the only Indian state where a portion of the population lives under a completely different income tax regime. While across India, only specific sources of incomeโ€”like agriculture or scholarshipsโ€”are tax-free, Sikkim stands as an exception where entire income portfolios can be tax-exempt for eligible natives.

The implications are profound. Sikkimโ€™s tax-free environment leads to higher personal savings, encourages reinvestment, and supports entrepreneurship. It has shaped unique financial behaviors in the region, allowing qualified individuals to build wealth without the tax liabilities that affect the rest of the country.

As FY25 unfolds and millions across India file their returns, Sikkim remains a reminder of how history, policy, and constitutional protections can create truly unique financial ecosystems. In a nation where taxation is often a constant topic of concern, Sikkimโ€™s continued exemption remains a fascinating anomaly in India’s tax landscape.
