Long before 1857, Goa witnessed its own rebellion — the Cuncolim Revolt of 1583, led by 16 tribal chieftains from the AVC villages of Assolna, Velim, and Cuncolim. This early people's uprising against Portuguese religious persecution marked one of the first armed resistances to foreign rule in India.
