Rural Journalists Spotlight Displacement and Development in Maharashtra at MOG Sunday Talk

Panaji, August 2025 — The intersection of development and displacement took centre stage at the Museum of Goa’s recent MOG Sunday session titled PARI: Stories from the Margins. Journalists from the People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI) presented gripping firsthand accounts of how large-scale projects in Maharashtra are uprooting rural and tribal communities, threatening their livelihoods, homes, and futures.

Among the highlighted stories was the impact of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, India’s ambitious Mumbai-Nagpur expressway, which stretches 701 kilometres through Maharashtra. Families dependent on river fishing were forcibly evicted without compensation, losing both their homes and their means of survival. Similarly, hydropower projects in the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats have displaced entire villages, leaving residents with little recourse despite holding proof of property ownership.

Jyoti YL, a journalist who reported from Maharashtra’s tribal and rural districts, shared poignant narratives of despair and invisibility faced by those affected. “For people on the ground, it often means displacement, despair and invisibility,” she said during her virtual talk. She recounted stories like that of Tulshi Bhagat, who travels over 40 km daily from Shahapur to Mumbai to sell palash leaves at the flower market, enduring police harassment and poverty.

The session also touched on the plight of children, whose education suffers due to school closures or mergers. Sons and daughters of migrant sugarcane workers and brick kiln laborers often have access only to makeshift classes run by community groups, with government support rarely materializing.

Video journalist Shreya Katyayini highlighted the importance of trust-building in rural journalism. “When I walk into a house, I don’t pull out my camera first. You have to almost become invisible so the story continues to be about them and not about you,” she said, emphasizing the empathetic and patient approach necessary to bring these stories to light authentically.

The MOG Sunday event reinforced the critical role of grassroots journalism in documenting development’s complex and often painful consequences on India’s rural heartlands. It serves as a powerful reminder that progress must be measured not only by infrastructure but by the dignity and rights of the people it impacts.

India Launches Its First ‘Ro-Ro’ Rail Service from Maharashtra to Goa

Written by Intern Queeny George M.H , Team Allycaral

August 2025 – India has taken a groundbreaking step in transforming its inter-state transport infrastructure with the official launch of its first ‘Ro-Ro’ (Roll-on/Roll-off) Rail Service. Designed to enhance passenger convenience, the new service allows travelers to board the train with their own private vehicles, significantly reducing travel stress, cost, and time.

‘Ro-Ro’ stands for Roll-on/Roll-off – a transport method where vehicles roll onto the train at the starting point and roll off at the destination. This model has been widely adopted across Europe and now makes its debut on Indian soil.

📍 Route Details

  • Starting Point: Kolad, Maharashtra
  • Destination: Verna, Goa
  • Carrying Capacity: Up to 40 cars per trip
  • Travel Duration: Optimized to reduce lengthy road travel

The service is operated using a dedicated locomotive coach attached to special car-carrying wagons. Passengers remain in their vehicles during transit or can move to a passenger coach if available.

Historically, Indian railways have been a backbone of national transport since the first passenger train ran from Bombay to Thane in 1853. This modern adaptation of Ro-Ro services signals a leap forward in accessible, eco-friendly, and personalized travel.

With heavy traffic congestion and long road trips being common between Maharashtra and Goa—especially during festive or tourist seasons—this Ro-Ro service offers a timely, stress-free alternative.

Bookings are now open to the public. A notable surge in advance reservations has been reported, showing immense public interest. The pricing is competitive, and the operational design ensures that the train reaches on time without frequent halts at intermediary stations.

Railway officials and transport ministers have highlighted the ‘Ro-Ro’ service as a “milestone in India’s vision for smart and sustainable travel.” The project has been designed keeping in mind the daily commuter as well as the weekend traveler.

Though currently limited to the Kolad–Verna route, there are speculations that the Indian Railways may soon replicate this model across other busy corridors. With its blend of personal comfort and rail efficiency, the Ro-Ro model could redefine the way Indians travel domestically.

FLY91 Adds Extra Flights on Pune-Sindhudurg Route to Meet Ganesh Chaturthi Travel Demand

As Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations begin to light up homes and hearts across Maharashtra, regional airline FLY91 is stepping up to ensure smooth travel for thousands. The Goa-based airline has announced additional flights on its increasingly popular Pune-Sindhudurg-Pune route to cater to the sharp spike in passenger demand during the festive period.

The new flights will operate on August 24, 29, 31, and September 5 and 7, offering greater flexibility and travel options for families heading back to their native places for the Ganpati festivities.

“Ganesh Chaturthi is a special time for our customers, with many travelling to be with family and friends,” said Manoj Chacko, Managing Director and CEO of FLY91. “By adding extra flights on our Pune-Sindhudurg-Pune route, we aim to give passengers greater flexibility and more options during this festive period.”

Ganesh Chaturthi, one of Maharashtra’s biggest festivals, sees a massive influx of travelers from cities back to their hometowns. Sindhudurg, known for its rich cultural heritage and coastal beauty, becomes a key travel hub during this time.

This move follows FLY91’s earlier additions to its schedule during the Independence Day long weekend, where it added flights on August 14, 15, and 18 on both the Pune-Goa-Pune and Pune-Sindhudurg-Pune sectors. These strategic enhancements underscore the airline’s agility in responding to peak travel demands.

Headquartered in Goa, FLY91 is focused on enhancing regional connectivity, especially linking tier 2 and tier 3 cities. With eight domestic destinations currently in its network, the airline connects four key cities in Maharashtra alone: Sindhudurg, Jalgaon, Solapur, and Pune.
