Madganvcho Awaaz Launches ‘Asmitai Vars’ to Mark 60 Years of the Historic Opinion Poll

Margao; January 2026: Madganvcho Awaaz has launched ‘Asmitai Vars’, a year-long series of activities to commemorate 60 years of the historic Opinion Poll of 1967, a defining moment that shaped Goa’s political, cultural and linguistic identity.


Senior advocate, former Margao MLA and Opinion Poll movement stalwart Adv. Uday Bhembre unveiled the initiative and described it as timely and meaningful, noting that while large sums are often spent on short-lived events, initiatives such as Asmitai Vars create lasting milestones for future generations. Youth leader Prabhav Naik and social worker Dattaraj Pai Fondekar were present on the occasion.
Expressing pride in continuing the legacy of the Opinion Poll movement, Prabhav Naik said he was honoured to carry forward the contributions of his great-grandfather Narcinva Naik and grandfather Anant alias Babu Naik, both of whom played key roles in the historic movement. He added that Madganvcho Awaaz remains committed to honouring eminent Goans who have worked to safeguard Goa’s identity, language and culture.
As part of the launch, Madganvcho Awaaz honoured living stalwarts of the Opinion Poll movement by visiting their residences and presenting them with mementoes, shawls and bouquets as a mark of respect and gratitude. Those honoured included Adv. Uday Bhembre, Prof. Shyam Verencar, Smriti Audi, Aruna Telang, N. Shivdas, Sadanand Kanekar and Tomazinho Cardozo, who played significant roles in the movement that determined Goa’s future.
The honoured stalwarts appreciated the efforts of Madganvcho Awaaz in remembering the architects of the Opinion Poll and expressed confidence that Asmitai Vars would inspire the younger generation to understand, value and protect Goa’s unique identity and heritage.

K. Vaikunth Birth Centenary Celebrated in Margao with Calls for Padma Award


Margao: The concluding day of the birth centenary celebrations of K. Vaikunth (Vaikunth Kuncolienkar), Goa’s renowned cinematographer, was held at Imperial Hall, Margao, organized by Madganvcho Awaaz.

The evening witnessed heartfelt tributes from filmmakers, artistes, and citizens who celebrated the artistry, simplicity, and Goan identity of K. Vaikunth, whose cinematic legacy remains etched in Indian cinema.

Youth leader Prabhav Naik highlighted Vaikunth’s invaluable contribution to cinema and cultural identity, urging the government to confer a Padma Award posthumously. He stressed the need for national recognition of his pioneering work.

The function began with a keynote address by Dr. Babita Angle Prabhudesai, who traced the life and cinematic journey of the cinematographer. Floral tributes were offered by family members and dignitaries, followed by a felicitation of the Kunkalienkar family by Madganvcho Awaaz. Tributes were also paid to A. Vaikunth, who passed away last year.

Eminent film personalities including Dharmanand Vernekar and Prasad Shinkre shared memories, while National Award-winning filmmaker Laxmikant Shetgaonkar called upon the film fraternity to collectively demand a lifetime memorial in honor of K. Vaikunth.

The evening also saw felicitation of members of Goa’s film fraternity for their contributions, including Dr. Pramod Salgaonkar, Jyoti Kunkalienkar, Prince Jacob, Christ Silva, Dinesh Bhosale, Miransha Naik, Dnyaneshwar Govekar, Rajdeep Naik, Suchita Narvekar, Mukund Shinkre, Swapnil Shetkar, Saiesh Panandikar and others.

The nostalgic gathering concluded with cultural unity, honoring a man who carried Goa’s name across Indian cinema and reminding the fraternity of the importance of preserving his cinematic heritage.

K. Vaikunth, known for his visual mastery and artistic storytelling, is celebrated as one of Goa’s earliest and most influential figures in Indian cinema. His work not only brought national recognition to Margao but also paved the way for generations of Goan filmmakers and cinematographers.

The event will mark the culmination of the centenary year celebrations, with the Kunkalienkar family—his descendants—joining prominent members of Goa’s film fraternity to honour his extraordinary contributions.

Youth leader Prabhav Naik, speaking on behalf of Madganvcho Awaaz, shared that the programme is more than a tribute—it is a call to the youth to embrace creativity, culture, and ambition. “Through his artistic lens and unique vision, K. Vaikunth left an indelible imprint on Indian cinema,” Naik said. “His journey from Margao to the national stage reminds us that Goans have always had the potential to lead and inspire.”

Naik also emphasised the organisation’s deep pride in hosting this centenary event, reflecting on K. Vaikunth’s legacy as a significant chapter in Goa’s cultural heritage.

The event is open to all, with an open invitation extended to film lovers, youth, and cultural enthusiasts to participate in this meaningful celebration.

Libia Lobo Sardesai (101) Unveils Madganvcho Awaaz Logo on Babu Naik’s 98th Birth Anniversary


Margao witnessed a historic and emotional moment as freedom fighter Libia Lobo Sardesai, aged 101, unveiled the logo of Madganvcho Awaaz on the 98th birth anniversary of former Margao MLA Babu Naik.

The event celebrated both the memory of Babu Naik and the enduring legacy of service he left behind. Known as a people’s leader, Naik’s life was dedicated to public welfare and grassroots engagement in Margao.

At the ceremony, Libia Lobo Sardesai, one of Goa’s most respected freedom fighters, extended her heartfelt blessings to Babu Naik’s grandson and emerging youth leader Prabhav Naik. She urged him to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps as a true Lok Sevak (public servant), committed to the welfare of the people above all else.

Prabhav Naik, moved by the blessings, expressed his gratitude and pledged to continue working for the community, inspired by his grandfather’s ideals and the values of honesty, simplicity, and public service.
