For Martin, a brand new nurse working the night shift in the NICU, one particular moment would forever change his perspective on what it means to be a nurse.

The patient was a tiny infant, born prematurely, and despite the best efforts of the medical team, there was little hope for survival. The young mother, though calm, was faced with the unimaginable pain of losing her child. Martin stood beside her, feeling helpless as they both waited for the inevitable.

In a moment of poignant clarity, the mother asked Martin to baptize her baby before they passed away. Martin’s initial reaction was one of panic, unsure of what to do next. He rushed to the charge nurse, who instructed him to call the chaplain. However, no one was available, and Martin was left with a daunting decision.
