Manipur Government Bans Use of Laser Lights Within 10 km of Imphal Airport for Flight Safety

Imphal | June 2025:
In a decisive move to enhance aviation safety, the Manipur government has officially banned the use of laser lights within a 10-kilometre radius of Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal. The directive is aimed at preventing distractions and potential hazards to aircraft pilots during take-off, landing, and low-altitude flight operations.

The ban comes in response to growing concerns from aviation authorities and commercial pilots who have reported incidents of laser beams being directed at aircraft cockpits, especially during critical phases of flight. Such incidents can temporarily blind or disorient pilots, posing a serious risk to passengers and crew onboard.

โš ๏ธ Why Laser Lights Are a Threat to Aviation

Laser pointers and other high-powered lights, when directed towards aircraft, can interfere with pilots’ visionโ€”especially during nighttime operations or poor weather conditions. Even brief exposure can cause temporary flash blindness, glare, and afterimages, which are dangerous during landing and takeoff, the most sensitive phases of flight.

According to civil aviation experts, even small handheld laser devices can illuminate a cockpit from miles away, making them a growing threat across airports worldwide.

๐Ÿ›‘ Strict Enforcement Underway

The Home Department of Manipur, in coordination with airport authorities and local law enforcement, will strictly enforce the restriction. Violators could face legal action, including fines and imprisonment under relevant provisions of the Indian Aircraft Act and other public safety laws.

All public venues, event organizers, hotels, and residents have been notified to refrain from using laser beams, laser toys, or high-intensity lighting devices that point skyward within the restricted radius.

๐Ÿ“ข Public Awareness Is Key

The government also plans to conduct an awareness campaign to educate the public on the dangers of laser use near airports and to encourage responsible behavior, especially during weddings, parties, and other events where such lights are commonly used.

โœˆ๏ธ About Imphal Airport

Bir Tikendrajit International Airport is Manipurโ€™s main aviation hub, connecting the Northeast to major cities across India. With rising air traffic and night flights, the safety of air operations has become a top priority for state and aviation authorities.

Flight safety is a shared responsibility. The public is urged to cooperate and help keep Manipurโ€™s skies safe.
