India Marks 54th Vijay Diwas, Honouring the Heroes of the 1971 War

Written by Tanisha Cardozo || Team Allycaral National Desk

India observed the 54th Vijay Diwas today, commemorating the historic victory of the Indian Armed Forces in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. The day stands as a reminder of the swift 13-day military campaign that led to the surrender of Pakistani forces and the creation of Bangladesh, marking one of the most decisive moments in South Asian history.

Leaders across the country paid homage to the soldiers who fought with exceptional bravery and determination. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, honoured the courage and sacrifices of the armed forces, acknowledging their role in safeguarding the nationโ€™s values and sovereignty.

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated a special gallery dedicated to Param Vir Chakra awardees, highlighting the stories of Indiaโ€™s bravest heroes, including Captain Arun Khetarpal, whose valour continues to inspire generations. Wreath-laying ceremonies and commemorative events were held across the country, bringing together veterans, serving personnel and citizens in remembrance.

The 1971 victory was the result of coordinated operations by the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, working in close cooperation with Bangladeshโ€™s Mukti Bahini. Their combined efforts not only ensured a decisive military success but also altered the geopolitical landscape of the region.

As India marked Vijay Diwas, the nation collectively remembered the sacrifices made by its soldiers and reaffirmed its gratitude to the men and women in uniform whose courage continues to define the spirit of the country.

To the Barracks, Not the Runway: Kashish Methwani Joins Indian Army After Winning Miss International India

In a world where the spotlight often leads to red carpets and fashion runways, Kashish Methwani took a turn that very few expected โ€” and many now admire. Crowned Miss International India in 2023, she was poised to make her mark in the modelling industry, with offers pouring in after her national win. But behind the glamour and grace was a deeper calling โ€” to serve the nation in uniform.

While most would ride the wave of fame, Kashish made a bold decision. She chose to prepare for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination, a highly competitive path to enter Indiaโ€™s defence forces. In 2024, she not only cleared the exam but also secured an All India Rank of 2, a feat that speaks volumes of her discipline, focus, and determination.

Following this achievement, she trained at the prestigious Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, known for forging some of the Indian Armyโ€™s finest officers. After months of rigorous physical, mental, and tactical training, Kashish Methwani has now been commissioned into the Army Air Defence (AAD) โ€” a key arm of Indiaโ€™s defence forces responsible for protecting the skies from enemy aircraft and missiles.

Today, she holds the rank of Lieutenant, trading in her sash for stars, and high heels for combat boots.

Her story is not just one of a career switch โ€” itโ€™s a story of commitment, courage, and clarity of purpose. In choosing the Indian Army over instant fame, Kashish Methwani has emerged as a powerful symbol of what it means to lead with both heart and strength.

For a generation often told to follow the easier path, her journey offers a resounding alternative: chase meaning, not just limelight. Serve, donโ€™t just shine.

She is Lieutenant Kashish Methwani โ€” beauty, brains, and bravery in one formidable force.

Held on Independence Day, the event created a confluence of language, emotion, and patriotism, serving both as a celebration of sibling bonds and a tribute to those who protect the nation.

A Unique Tribute Through Words

This programme stood apart by blending Kavya (poetry) with Samman (honour). Eminent Marathi poets, students, and NCC cadets recited verses dedicated to the sacrifices and strength of Indiaโ€™s armed forces. It was a literary salute wrapped in emotion and pride.

Honouring Leadership & Bravery

Besides poetic performances, the event featured felicitations for leaders in the armed forces and within the university/NCC ecosystem who exemplify commitment, discipline, and service to the nation.

Bringing Together Campus & Corps

The collaboration between Goa University and the 1 Goa Battalion NCC is part of a broader vision to embed civic and cultural values in academic life. By involving students in such meaningful programmes, it fosters deeper understanding and respect for national service.

Moving Forward

Both institutions aim to make this celebration an annual tradition, where poetry becomes a medium to express gratitude, pride, and patriotism โ€” and Rakshabandhan becomes more than a festival, but a day of national appreciation.
