Panaji, July 2025 – The 11th edition of the Rotary Rain Run, one of India’s most well-known monsoon runs, will take place on July 27 (Sunday) in rainswept Goa. The state’s premier endurance event is expected to witness participation from over 2,500 runners, including dozens of young children and elderly citizens.

The annual run, which combines the thrill of competition with the power of social impact, is organised by the Rotary Charitable Trust of Porvorim in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Porvorim and the Rotary Parivar, a collective of Rotary organisations in the coastal state.

The event was officially announced at a press conference where the official jersey and medals for this year’s edition were unveiled.

Addressing the media were Avinash Singh Parmar (chairman, Rotary Rain Run), Harsh Thakkar (president, Rotary Club of Porvorim), Shephan Shaikh (coordinator, Rotary Rain Run) and Nikhil Shah (chairman, Prakash Cancer Aid Project).

“Rotary Rain Run 2025 continues to grow in stature and participation, not just as a fitness event but as a force for social change. This year, we are delighted to have returning and new participants, including respected public figures such as the TN Health Minister for Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ma Subramanian, and Goa’s DGP Alok Kumar. Their presence reinforces the event’s social importance and reflects its popularity,” said Avinash Singh Parmar, chairman of the Rotary Rain Run.

“Every year, the Rotary Rain Run has been instrumental in creating awareness about women’s health and the Prakash Cancer Aid Project. There is a higher chance of curing diseases such as breast and cervical cancer among women, if they are detected early, something that the Project focuses on,” according to Nikhil Shah, chairman, Prakash Cancer Aid Project.

The Rotary Rain Run 2025 will commence at the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) Athletics Stadium in Bambolim, with participants competing in various categories: the two km Fun Walk, five km Dream Run, and the 10 km and 21 km timed races. Senior citizens will once again have their dedicated two km Seniority Walk, introduced in the previous edition. Kids at the venue can also frolic in the specially created Fun Zone at the race’s end point.

Runners in the 21 km timed category will turn around at Miramar Circle, following a scenic route through Bambolim and Dona Paula, showcasing panoramic views of Goa’s coastline and heritage landmarks.

“Running is not just about endurance; it’s about health, purpose and community. We are heartened to see support from across India and abroad, especially with high-profile athletes, even political leaders and bureaucrats participating shoulder-to-shoulder with everyday runners,” said Harsh Thakkar, president, Rotary Club of Porvorim.

Certified Measured Course by World Athletics in Cooperation with AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races), the Rotary Rain Run continues to draw international runners and amateur athletes alike, building on its reputation for professionalism and community engagement.

The registration window closes on July 24, and participants can sign up across all race categories at https://rotaryrainrun.com/

Poetry in Motion: Poets Narrate Their ‘Poems on the Move’ Across Panaji at SAF 2024

Poetry hitched a ride along at the ongoing Serendipity Arts Festival, with young poets armed with poetry, stepping onboard festival shuttles travelling between festival venues and regaling passengers with quick, unexpected bursts of poems.

Conceived as part of the festival’s special programming under the ‘Poems on the Move’ project, curated by Goa-based writer, poet Salil Chaturvedi and Delhi-based artist duo Jiten Thukral & Sumir Tagra, the special guerilla-styled poetry project, was aimed at creating unique, transient spaces where individuals come together in unexpected moments of wonder, reshaping how we perceive both poetry and the urban journey, while also driving home the significance of a pause in fast-paced urban environments.

“Poetry brings a pause. Even if it’s bad poetry, it brings a (sense of) pause. Because you need to be in a certain mood or stop and engage with it. As you can see in the hustle and bustle, you do need to stop and reflect,” said Chaturvedi, an acclaimed poet himself.

According to Thukral, through ‘Poems on the Move’ “we wanted the most mundane journey of sitting in a cab to be the most memorable, in a way that these 5 minutes of your life can be seen as slowing down.”

Goan-origin poets, namely Asavari Gurav, Deepali Sutar, Mamata Verlekar, Rochelle D’Silva joined forces with Rochelle Potkar, Anamika Joshi and Darshan Singh Grewal, for the special project.

And the reaction from their audiences, co-passengers in festival shuttles, was enjoyable for both the poet and the passengers.

“People thoroughly enjoyed listening to the poems and appreciated the intimate nature of the conversation. Some even shared their poems with me, making this exchange a truly special and memorable experience,” Verlekar said.

“There have been instances where someone has sat in (the shuttle) and didn’t want to listen to poetry. But, then at the end of it, they didn’t want to leave. So, I’ve had people who have taken that journey to Nagalli and come back to Old GMC Complex with me to listen to more poetry,” said D’Silva.

‘Poems on the Move’ presented an intimate and experimental poetic encounter that turned a quintessentially mundane urban experience—a cab ride—into a journey of poetic discovery and the presence of local Goan poets who knew the lay of the land helped, says co-curator Tagra.

“Most of our poets are local; they know Goa; they know how to navigate,” he concluded.
