Three Medical Residents from Healthway Hospitals Goa Shine at APICON 2026

Written by Intern Rency Gomes || Team Allycaral

Panaji, February 2026: Three medical residents from Healthway Hospitals have brought laurels to Goa by securing fifth place in the APICON Quiz at the 81st Annual Conference of the Association of Physicians of India โ€” APICON 2026 โ€” held in Patna.

The residents โ€” Dr Dhruv Bawania, Dr Ankit Nair and Dr Pritesh Vaishnav โ€” are currently pursuing their DNB Medicine at Healthway Hospitals. Representing Goa, they competed against 48 teams from leading medical colleges across the country.

APICON is one of Indiaโ€™s largest national gatherings of physicians and internal medicine specialists, with nearly 10,000 delegates in attendance. The conference featured academic sessions, workshops and the highly competitive National Medical Quiz.

At the quiz, the Goa team secured a spot among the top finalists and clinched fifth position, following IPGMER & SSKM, Kolkata (1st), Madras Medical College & Stanley Medical College, Chennai (2nd), KMC Manipal (3rd) and NIMS Hyderabad (4th).

The efforts of Dr Dhruv Bawania and Dr Ankit Nair were particularly noteworthy as they were the only first-year DNB Medicine residents competing at the national level. The team was also applauded for being the only participants to correctly answer one of the most challenging questions in the quiz.

This achievement adds to the teamโ€™s consistent academic record. They were previously selected for the zonal round in Mumbai for the national quiz at IRACON 2025 and qualified for the semifinal round of the National Medical Quiz at the RSSDI Conference 2025.

The team was felicitated by Dr Kamlesh Tewary, President of APICON 2026 and former Dean of the Indian College of Physicians.

Speaking about the achievement, Dr Vijay Naik, Head of the Medicine Department at Healthway Hospitals, said the accomplishment marks a significant milestone for both the institution and the state, especially considering that the hospitalโ€™s DNB programme was established only three years ago.

Healthway Hospitals has been conducting the three-year DNB (Diplomate of National Board) Medicine programme, which awards a qualification equivalent to an MD in India. The national recognition of its residents has further strengthened Goaโ€™s standing among the countryโ€™s established medical institutions.

Union Budget 2026โ€“27: Boost for Regional Healthcare, Big Opportunity for Goa

Welcoming the Union Budget 2026โ€“27, Surendra Prasad, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospital Goa, has termed the governmentโ€™s proposal to establish five regional medical hubs across the country as a transformative step for Indiaโ€™s healthcare ecosystem.

He said the creation of integrated medical hubsโ€”bringing together advanced hospitals, diagnostics, rehabilitation, and wellness facilitiesโ€”will help decentralise quality healthcare services and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised treatment.

โ€œThis approach ensures that patients receive timely, accessible, and high-quality care closer to home. Strengthening regional healthcare capacity is critical to improving overall health outcomes and reducing pressure on metropolitan hospitals,โ€ Prasad stated.

Highlighting the Goa perspective, he noted that the announcement presents a significant opportunity for the state. โ€œGoa already enjoys a strong reputation in tourism and wellness. Strengthening healthcare infrastructure through regional medical hubs can position Goa as a preferred destination for medical and wellness tourism, benefiting both residents and visitors,โ€ he added.

Prasad also welcomed the Budgetโ€™s emphasis on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models and national insurance coverage, stating that these measures will accelerate infrastructure development while ensuring affordability and accessibility.

โ€œThe focus on collaboration between the public and private sectors, combined with expanded insurance coverage, brings us closer to achieving equitable, timely, and quality healthcare for all,โ€ he concluded.

Doctors at Healthway Hospitals Perform Landmark Fenestrated Endovascular Aortic Repair in Goa

Panaji, August 2025 โ€“ In a breakthrough for Goaโ€™s private healthcare sector, doctors at Healthway Hospitals, Old Goa, successfully performed a fenestrated endovascular aortic repair (FEVAR) on a patient with a juxtarenal aortic aneurysm.

This is the first such procedure to be carried out in a private hospital in Goa and only the second case documented in the state. The patientโ€™s aneurysm, dangerously close to the renal arteries, exceeded five cm in diameter and was growing rapidly, raising the risk of a fatal rupture. The minimally invasive surgery involved inserting catheters and guidewires through small incisions in the groin and arm, followed by positioning a customised fenestrated stent graft to align with the renal arteries and placing covered stents to preserve blood supply.

Final angiography confirmed exclusion of the aneurysm and restored blood flow. Without this procedure, the patient would have required high-risk open surgery. Dr Pawan Kumar, senior interventional radiologist at Healthway Hospitals, explained that creating surgical fenestrations was the most challenging aspect, as waiting for a Customised Device (CMD) from abroad would have taken weeks, which the patientโ€™s condition did not allow.

The surgical team included Dr Girish Warawdekar and Dr Pankaj Patel from Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, along with Dr Pawan Kumar, Dr Pankaj Naik, Dr Nikhil Bhomkar, Dr Sanjeev Juwarkar, Dr Glory Katiyar and Dr Jannita Kundaikar from Healthway Hospitals, supported by cath lab technicians and nursing staff.

This landmark case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, timely intervention and advanced endovascular expertise in treating complex aneurysms and strengthens Goaโ€™s position in the field of advanced healthcare and medical innovation.
