Phytoplankton Art Project Brings Marine Ecology Awareness to Bengaluru’s Children

Written by Tanisha Cardozo || Team Allycaral

From Goa’s coastline to a landlocked city, a children’s art initiative developed by the Goa-based Children’s Art Studio and co-supported by the Museum of Goa is carrying marine education beyond the sea. Phytoplankton World: The Unseen Heroes of Marine Life will be presented in Bengaluru from January 16 to 25 at Freedom Park as part of Makkala Hubba under the larger BLR Hubba cultural festival.

Rooted in Goa’s coastal ecology, the immersive project introduces children to phytoplankton—microscopic marine organisms that form the foundation of ocean life and play a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s climate. Designed for children aged four to twelve, the experience transforms complex marine science into accessible learning through glow-in-the-dark installations, sensory environments and hands-on creative activities, reflecting how Goa’s close relationship with the sea can inspire environmental learning far beyond its shores.

Aligned with the philosophy of Makkala Hubba, a children-focused platform known for its emphasis on climate awareness and sensorial engagement, the project invites young visitors into an underwater-inspired space where curiosity drives learning and exploration unfolds through making and play.

Sharada Kerkar, Director of the Museum of Goa and Co-Founder of the Children’s Art Studio, said the project originated from a personal encounter with bioluminescence. She recalled kayaking at night in Vasco and witnessing the sea glow in shades of green and blue, caused by phytoplankton. The experience, she said, sparked a desire to create glowing environments that others could experience while learning about these unseen marine heroes.

The project evolved through extensive research into various types of phytoplankton and their forms, which were visualised at an enlarged scale through sketches, digital 3D imagery and architectural models. The team experimented with glow-in-the-dark and reusable materials to suit the underwater theme, eventually shaping an immersive environment that guides children through a layered learning journey.

Artist and educator Tincy Paulose from the Children’s Art Studio described the creative process as deeply engaging, noting that working with glowing materials brought out a sense of wonder and play. She said the project went beyond art-making, becoming a space for discovery and learning about the fascinating world of microscopic marine life.

Two guided workshops form a central part of the programme. Glow Beneath the Sea allows children to create glowing sea creatures while learning about the marine food chain and the foundational role of phytoplankton. Glow Microscopic Worlds encourages participants to imagine and design glowing phytoplankton inspired by organisms such as diatoms, dinoflagellates, cyanobacteria and coccolithophores, translating scientific knowledge into creative expression.

Govt College Khandola Students Experience Sustainable Farming Firsthand at Tato’s Kulaghar

July 31, 2025: As part of the TY VET paper on Environment and Sustainable Development, the Department of Political Science at Government College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Khandola organized an insightful and hands-on study visit to Tato’s Kulaghar, Chodan.

Led by Prof. Dr. Seema P. Salgaonkar (Vice Principal and HOD) and Mr. Akbar Gaded (Assistant Professor), the field visit involved 30 enthusiastic students eager to understand sustainability in action.

Experiencing Sustainability Beyond the Classroom

Students got directly involved in:

  • 🌱 Weeding and planting paddy saplings, learning the physical demands and environmental benefits of traditional farming.
  • 🍲 Sampling local Goan staples like pej (rice gruel), tor (cooked pulses), and traditional chillies — nourishing and culturally rich.
  • 🛁 Participating in a playful yet grounding mud bath near the sluice gate, a rural rite of connection with the land.

The immersive experience bridged textbook knowledge with lived practice, deepening students’ appreciation of ecological balance, rural livelihoods, and local food systems.

“This visit allowed students to connect meaningfully with sustainable development — not just as a theory but as a way of life,” said Prof. Dr. Seema Salgaonkar.

From soil to table, and sweat to smiles, this visit planted the seeds of awareness and environmental responsibility in the minds of Goa’s future changemakers.

🌍 PM SHRI GHS Morpirla Celebrates World Environment Day 2025

One Mission – End Plastic Pollution

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, PM SHRI GHS Morpirla united under the global theme “One Mission – End Plastic Pollution”, emphasizing the urgent need to tackle the escalating environmental, social, economic, and health risks posed by plastic waste.

The celebration was not just a one-day event—it was a call to action for every student, teacher, and community member to commit to a more sustainable future. The school organized a series of engaging and meaningful activities to promote environmental awareness, sustainability, and responsible lifestyle choices among the youth.

🌿 Highlights of the Celebration

🌳 Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0 Campaign Launch

In a heartwarming initiative, the school launched the second edition of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, encouraging students to plant a tree in honor of their mothers. This symbolic act beautifully connected the idea of nurturing nature with the love and respect for one’s mother. Students eagerly took part in the Tree Plantation Drive, planting saplings across the school campus and pledging to take care of them.

🐦 Bird Feeder Craft Activity

In a creative effort to support biodiversity, students made eco-friendly bird feeders using recycled materials. These feeders will be placed around the campus and at students’ homes to provide food and shelter for local bird species, fostering a sense of responsibility towards even the smallest creatures in our ecosystem.

🎨 Poster Making Competition

A poster-making competition was held where students showcased their artistic skills and environmental awareness. The posters depicted powerful messages around ending plastic pollution, conserving nature, and building a sustainable world. This activity sparked important conversations about environmental issues among students.

💃 Dance Performance – “Reduce Plastic”

Through an energetic and expressive dance performance, students highlighted the importance of reducing plastic consumption. The performance creatively illustrated the consequences of plastic pollution and inspired the audience to adopt eco-friendly alternatives in their daily lives.

🎵 Musical Tribute – “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”

Adding a melodious touch to the celebration, students sang a beautiful song dedicated to the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. The lyrics emphasized the importance of planting trees, conserving nature, and building a greener planet for future generations.

🌱 A Step Toward Sustainable Living

Throughout the event, emphasis was placed on the broader environmental challenges including climate change, ecosystem degradation, and unsustainable resource use. Discussions and activities helped students understand the interconnectedness of these issues and the role they can play in mitigating them.

The celebration successfully ignited a spark of environmental consciousness among students and staff. By combining education, creativity, and action, PM SHRI GHS Morpirla continues to nurture environmentally responsible citizens and pave the way for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
