National Seminar Celebrates Life and Literature of Dr. Manoharrai Sardesai


Renowned Konkani writer Dr. Manoharrai Sardesai was remembered and celebrated at a one-day National Seminar on “Dr. Manoharrai Sardesai: Life and Literature.” The seminar was organized jointly by M.E.S. Vasant Joshi College Arts and Commerce Zuarinagar, Goa Konkani Academy, and the Directorate of Official Language, Government of Goa.

Inaugural Session
The seminar commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp, followed by a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Manasvi M. Kamat, Principal of M.E.S. Vasant Joshi College. Prof. Satyawan Naik, Head of the Konkani Department and Seminar Coordinator, presented the seminar’s concept and objectives. Vice Principal Rochana Kharangate introduced the chief guest, Shashikant Sardesai, former principal of S. S. Dempo College.

Shashikant Sardesai’s Keynote Address
Shashikant Sardesai, in his keynote address, highlighted Dr. Manoharrai Sardesai’s unique personality and literary contributions. He noted that Dr. Sardesai was known both as an individual and as a writer, presenting socially relevant topics through his literary works. Sardesai’s poetry reflected his personal experiences, and he guided new writers, nurturing literary talent.

Research Papers and Sessions
The seminar featured two sessions, each chaired by a distinguished scholar. The first session, chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Rajay Pawar, Principal of Kala Academy’s College of Theatre Arts, saw research papers presented by Shailendra Mehta, Maya Kharangate, and Rajat Hegde. The second session, chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Cosma Fernandes, Head of the Konkani Department, featured research papers by Raymond D’Cunha, Umesh Sardesai, and R. S. Bhaskar.

Concluding Session
The concluding session was graced by Maya Sardesai, Vice Principal of Dempe Higher Secondary School, as the chief guest. She shared personal insights about Dr. Manoharrai Sardesai’s character, highlighting his respect for women, love for children, and constant encouragement to others.

Vote of Thanks and Conclusion
In his vote of thanks, Satyawan Naik expressed gratitude to all participants and contributors. The event concluded with Asst. Prof. Nalisha Velip compering the final session. The National Seminar attracted around 150 attendees, including scholars, teachers, students, and admirers of Dr. Manoharrai Sardesai, from Goa, Mangalore, Kerala, Mumbai, and other regions.

“Grahak Hakka Jagruti”: A New Book by Dhananjay Jog to Empower Consumers


In a significant event for consumer rights awareness, the Directorate of Official Language, in collaboration with the Institute Menezes Braganza, is set to release a new book titled “Grahak Hakka Jagruti” (Consumer Rights Awareness) on February 28, 2025. Written by retired Judge of the Goa Consumer Court, Shri. Dhananjay Jog, this book aims to educate consumers about their rights and responsibilities.

The book comprises the Marathi translation of 50 selected judgments of the Court, providing valuable insights into consumer rights and the legal framework that supports them. This compilation is expected to serve as a vital resource for consumers, lawyers, and judges alike.

The book launch event will take place on February 28, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji. The Chairman of the Institute, Shri. Dasharath Parab, will be the Chief Guest, while the State Information Commissioner, Shri. Atmaram Barve, will be the Guest of Honour.

The Directorate of Official Language has appealed to the public to attend the function in large numbers, emphasizing the importance of consumer rights awareness in promoting a fair and just society. By attending the event and engaging with the book’s content, individuals can empower themselves with knowledge and contribute to a more informed and aware consumer community.

The Opinion Poll Day preserved the identity of Goa


The Directorate of Official Language, Government of Goa โ€‹โ€‹organised special programmes in North and South Goa on the occasion of the Opinion Poll Day. A special programme titled as Opinion Poll: The Movement for Goa’s Existence’ was held in South Goa in collaboration with M.A. Konkani Department of Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem. Konkani writer and thinker Adv. Uday Bhembre gave information on the events of the Opinion Poll day. Adv. Uday Bhembre, is one of the leaders who expressed Opinion Poll day and worked to safeguard Goaโ€™s separate identity, highlighted the important events from 1963 to 1967. He further said that this day preserved the separate identity of Goa.

Director of Official Language Prashant Shirodkar, Principal of the college Dr. Joydeep Bhattacharjee, Asst. Professor Sushant Naik, Programme Coordinator Deepraj Satordekar, Junior Translator Sneha Sabnis, and other assistant professors as well as students were present.

Director Prashant Shirodkar said that Adv. Uday Bhembre is the right person who can share events of Opinion Poll which he experienced and such programmes are organised to create awareness about the day among the students. Asst. Professor Sushant Naik delivered the welcome address. Asst. Professor Deepraj Satordekar introduced the guest. Translator Sneha Sabnis gave the vote of thanks.

In North Goa, Directorate Official Language, the Department of Konkani and the Department of Political Science of the Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Khandola jointly organised the Opinion Poll day programme. At the event, senior journalist and writer Sandesh Prabhudesai shed light on the history of the Opinion Poll. Sandesh Prabhudesai said that Opinion Poll gave Goa an independent existence and the youth made a huge contribution during that period. He added that it is because of this day that Goans can express their views today.

Deputy Director of Official Language โ€‹โ€‹Anil Sawant delivered the introductory address. Principal Dr. Purnakala Samant delivered the welcome address. Asst. Professor Prithvi Naik moderated the function and introduced the guest. Asst. Professor Divya Govekar delivered the vote of thanks. Prof. Prakash Vazrikar, Head of Konkani Department, Prof. Seema Salgaonkar, and assistant professors from various departments and students were present.

About 230 students, teachers and government employees learned about the Opinion Poll at both the programmes.
