Delhi Warriors Hold Nerve to Edge Maharashtra Tycoons in Low-Scoring Thriller

Goa, January 30, 2026:
Match 8 of the World Legends Pro T20 League 2026 delivered a contest that rewarded patience and tactical awareness, as Delhi Warriors edged past Maharashtra Tycoons by three wickets in a tightly fought encounter.

Asked to bat first, Maharashtra Tycoons posted 161 for 5 on a surface that offered assistance to bowlers willing to maintain discipline. Openers Sir Alastair Cook and Chris Gayle began positively, with Cook striking early boundaries before falling for 10 off 11 balls.

Gayle then partnered Stuart Binny to steady the innings through the middle overs. While Gayle played a measured knock of 40 off 40 deliveries, Binny provided the impetus, scoring a fluent 63 off 31 balls to lift the Tycoons to a competitive total.

Defending 161, the Tycoons produced a probing bowling effort that placed Delhi under early pressure. Avaan Khan, Peter Siddle and Dale Steyn exploited the conditions effectively, with Steyn delivering an outstanding spell. The veteran pacer conceded just seven runs in his first three overs and claimed two wickets, leaving Delhi struggling at 41 for 3 at the end of the powerplay.

Delhi Warriors responded through a composed partnership between Sheldon Jackson and Irfan Pathan, who absorbed the pressure and rebuilt the innings. Sensing the shift in momentum, captain Carlos Brathwaite reintroduced Siddle, who struck immediately by clean-bowling Jackson, reducing Delhi to 107 for 5 in the 13th over. Brathwaite added another wicket soon after to keep the contest evenly poised.

With Pathan holding one end up and the required rate creeping higher, the Tycoons once again turned to Steyn for a breakthrough. Despite his continued economy, wickets proved hard to come by in the closing stages. Delhi kept their composure and crossed the line at 163 for 7 in 19.2 overs, sealing a narrow three-wicket victory and maintaining their unbeaten run in the tournament.

IPL Auction Records: The Costliest Players Sold So Far and the Big Question for 2026

Written by Tanisha Cardozo || Team Allycaral Sports Desk

The Indian Premier League has long been a stage where talent meets staggering valuations, and recent auction cycles have only reinforced that reputation. Over the years, franchises have consistently broken records in their pursuit of match-winners, leaders, and crowd-pullers, pushing player prices to unprecedented levels.

At the top of the list so far stands Rishabh Pant, who became the most expensive player in IPL history after being sold for ₹27 crore in 2025. Close behind him is Shreyas Iyer, who fetched ₹26.75 crore in the same year, underlining the premium teams are willing to pay for proven Indian leaders. The trend of aggressive bidding was also evident in 2024, when Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc returned to the IPL with a massive ₹24.75 crore deal, making him the most expensive overseas player at the time.

The 2025 auction further highlighted the league’s financial muscle, with Venkatesh Iyer going for ₹23.75 crore, while Pat Cummins and Sam Curran continued to command big numbers in previous seasons. Indian bowlers have also seen their value rise sharply, with Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh each being picked up for ₹18 crore in 2025, reflecting the growing demand for proven wicket-takers in the tournament.

As franchises now turn their attention to the IPL 2026 auction, speculation is already rife. With evolving team combinations, new stars emerging, and established players continuing to deliver on the big stage, the question remains wide open — who will be the next name to rewrite the IPL auction record books?
