With 1200 participants, first edition of Rotary Club of Panaji Mid-Town Mathias Panaji Run 2025 gets off to flying start


Panaji: The Rotary Club of Panaji Mid Town Mathias Panaji Run 2025, a charity-driven fitness event that combined health, inclusivity, and community service was held recently.

The event, held outside Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Taleigao, witnessed 1,200 participants that comprised athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and community members.

The inaugural edition attracted elite and passionate runners from across the country, elevating the event’s competitive appeal

The Mathais Panaji Run included a 10-km timed race, a 5-km walk/run, and a 1-km walk with students from the National Association for the Blind (NAB) and People with Disabilities (PwD).

The event coincided with the Carnival festivities, with participants donning creative outfits in hopes of winning prizes for the Best Dressed Individual and Best Dressed Group.

Winners were awarded cash prizes totaling ₹1 lakh across various categories.

Beyond promoting fitness, the run also contributed to Rotary’s flagship social initiatives that include Saksharata – Educational grants for deserving students, Sudharata – financial aid for corrective surgeries, Sahayanta – nurse training for elderly care, Swachata – water purifiers for schools in remote areas, and Sanjivani – medical resources such as oxygen concentrators and fowler beds for those in need.

Rtn. Dattatray W. Kamat, President of the Rotary Club of Panaji Mid Town, expressed his delight at the success of the event. “I am extremely happy that the first-ever Mathias Panaji Run was organized during my tenure. The overwhelming response and the grand success of the event give us the confidence to continue this initiative for years to come. Most importantly, the funds raised will be directed toward great causes, making a meaningful impact on the community,” he said.

While Sheetal Pai Kane, Convenor- Mathias Panaji Run 2025 said, “We are thrilled with the overwhelming response to the Mathias Panaji Run 2025, with 1,200 participants coming together to celebrate fitness, inclusivity, and community service. Seeing individuals of all ages embrace the spirit of the event was truly heartwarming. This run was not just about fitness, but also about making a difference through Rotary’s key initiatives,” she said.

“A big thank you to all our participants, sponsors, and volunteers for their incredible support. We look forward to an even bigger and better Edition 2 next year,” Kane added.

Neil Dsilva and Agnelo Desa from Team Yoska played a crucial role in overseeing the run with their technical expertise, ensuring a smooth and well-managed event.

Meanwhile, title sponsors Joe and Mariola Mathias have committed to continuing their association with the event, reaffirming their support as the title sponsors of the Rotary Club of Panaji Mid-Town Mathias Panaji Run in the coming years.

The participants praised the overall organisation of the event.

“The 10K event I participated in was exceptionally well-organized, starting on time with adequate traffic control and road closures in place. The hydration stations were well spaced, though I didn’t need to use them. The post-run breakfast was well-planned and ideal for recovery. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, ” said Dinesh Heda an Ultra Marathoner from Vasco, who was first Runner-up (50-59 Age Category).

“The Panaji 10K Run was planned in the simplest way—a true race experience. Ample aid stations, excellent route management, a well-organized start and award ceremony, and the best post-race refreshments I’ve ever had made it perfect. I would love to race in this event again, ” said another participant Nihal Ahamad Baig, Hyderabad who came First (30-39 Age Category). He was the winner in the IRONMAN 70.3 Goa in 2022 and 2023.

Beena Philip: A Beacon of Hope in Social Work


Beena Philip, a renowned social worker, has been making waves in the industry with her tireless efforts to empower women and children. Recently, she was honored with the prestigious Social Work Orchid Awards 2025, a testament to her dedication and commitment to creating positive social change.


Born into a family of social workers, Beena was inspired by her mother’s selflessness and dedication to helping distressed women. This exposure sparked a desire within her to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Her journey in social work was further shaped by her experiences and values, particularly the national pledge she recited daily in middle school, which emphasized the importance of treating all Indians as brothers and sisters.


Beena is deeply passionate about empowering women and girls, believing that they possess immense potential that often remains unrecognized and untapped. Through her work, she aims to help them discover their strengths and live their lives to the fullest. Her organization has provided a safe haven and care for over 800 children and empowered nearly 2000 women from disadvantaged backgrounds.


Beena employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative metrics to assess the impact of her work. She tracks the number of people served, monitors improvements in their quality of life, and evaluates the long-term sustainability of her programs. Despite facing challenges such as managing 24/7 care, combating social stigma, and finding genuine support staff, Beena relies on her resilience, adaptability, and motivation to overcome these obstacles.


Beena believes that collaboration and innovation are crucial in driving positive social change. She sees opportunities for synergy between non-profit organizations, government agencies, and private sector companies to leverage resources, expertise, and funding to resolve social issues. She also emphasizes the importance of partnering with local communities and grassroots organizations to better understand the needs and concerns of the people they serve.


Beena advises aspiring social workers to be prepared to face challenges, but also to be open to opportunities for growth and learning. She emphasizes the importance of self-care, seeking support when needed, and maintaining a passion for the work. Beena also encourages social workers to be open to feedback and constructive criticism, which can help them identify areas for improvement and grow as professionals.


Beena hopes that her work will be remembered for empowering women and children to break free from cycles of poverty, inequality, and social injustice. She aims to leave a legacy that promotes dignity for all human beings, a culture of inclusivity, and compassion. Her message to the wider community is to recognize that social change is a collective responsibility and to work together to create a more just, equitable, and compassionate world.


Receiving the Social Work Orchid Award 2025 has been a humbling experience for Beena. She believes that this award will not only bring awareness to the cause she is passionate about but also attract like-minded individuals who share her commitment to creating positive social change.

Goan Community Mourns the Loss of Alvaro Collaço


The Goan community in the UK came together to pay their respects to Alvaro Collaço, former chairman of the Goan Overseas Association (GOA) UK, who passed away on December 31, 2024. A memorial service was held at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in South London, attended by relatives, friends, and community members.


Alvaro Collaço was a dedicated servant of the Goan community in the UK. Born in Jinja, Uganda, he studied in Goa and Poona before returning to Entebbe, Uganda, where he served in the government ministries for over 19 years. After moving to the UK in 1973, he worked as Company Secretary for the Technical Education and Training Organisation for Overseas Countries (TETOC) and later retired as Assistant Director of the British Council’s Educational Contracts Department.


Alvaro played an active role in the G.O.A. (UK) for many years, serving as Chairman of their Council of Management from 1983 to 1986. He was instrumental in acquiring the G.O.A. (UK) clubhouse in Beckenham and setting up the former Standing Conference of Goan Organisations (SCOGO), now known as the GOAN festival. He also served as Governor of the St Francis Xavier 6th Form College in Clapham.


Mervyn Maciel, a 95-year-old former Senior Civil Servant, remembered Alvaro with great affection, saying, “He had nothing but Goan blood flowing through his veins. He was passionate about doing things with the uplift of the community in mind.” Watford Borough Councillor Rabi Martins described Alvaro as “a gentle giant with wisdom, foresight, and determination.”


Alvaro Collaço’s legacy will live on through the Goan Association UK, which he helped shape and grow. His commitment to the community and his tireless efforts to promote Goan culture and heritage will be deeply missed. The Goan community in the UK will continue to celebrate his life and legacy, inspiring future generations to follow in his footsteps.

Legal Aid Camp Held at Panaji District and Sessions Court


In a bid to promote legal awareness and provide free legal aid to the public, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in association with the Legal Aid Cell Mala, comprising students from Salgaonkar Law College, organized a legal aid camp at the Panaji District and Sessions Court.

Eminent Speakers Share Valuable Insights
The camp featured a series of informative sessions, with prominent speakers sharing their expertise on mediation and other legal topics. Principal District Judge Irshad Agha delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the importance of mediation in resolving disputes. Advocate Mendes also spoke on the subject, providing valuable insights into the mediation process.

Dignitaries Attend and Show Support
Shantashri Kudchadker, Secretary of DLSA, was present at the event, along with Judge Arti Kumari. Shri Santosh Bharne, President of the Advocates Association Panaji, also attended the camp, showing support for the initiative.

The primary objective of the legal aid camp was to create awareness about the importance of mediation and other legal services available to the public. The event aimed to empower citizens with knowledge about their rights and provide them with access to free legal aid.

This recognition marks a historic milestone, as Vishal is among the first two boys from Goa to receive this national honor.

Vishal, a third-year (link unavailable) student at Dnyanprassarak Mandal’s College & Research Centre, Assagao, has demonstrated remarkable commitment to community service and national integration through his active participation in NSS. His impressive achievements include:
