Three Kings Feast: Where Goa’s Reis Magos Meets the Story of Epiphany

Written by Tanisha Cardozo || Team Allycaral

The Feast of the Three Kings, known in the Christian calendar as Epiphany, marks the moment when the Magi—often referred to as the Three Kings—visited the infant Jesus, guided by a star. Celebrated on January 6 across much of the Christian world, the feast symbolises revelation, light, and the recognition of Christ beyond boundaries of place or origin.

While Epiphany is observed in churches globally through special prayers, blessings, and liturgies, its expression varies widely across cultures. In many European countries, the day is marked with processions, symbolic offerings, and festive meals. Children often receive gifts, echoing the offerings of gold, frankincense, and myrrh presented by the Magi. At its heart, however, the feast remains a celebration of faith revealed and shared.

In Goa, the Feast of the Three Kings takes on a distinct cultural identity through the tradition of Reis Magos, literally meaning “Three Kings.” Celebrated with particular fervour in villages such as Candolim, Verem, and especially Reis Magos itself, the feast blends Christian symbolism with Goan community life. The celebrations often feature processions, reenactments, music, and village gatherings that transform the biblical narrative into a lived, collective experience.

One of the most recognisable elements of Goa’s Reis Magos tradition is the portrayal of the Three Kings, often represented by local youth dressed in vibrant attire, symbolising the journey of the Magi. These representations move through villages, drawing residents together in a shared celebration that is both devotional and festive. For many Goans, the day is as much about community bonding as it is about religious observance.

The feast also marks a transition in the Christmas season, serving as its symbolic conclusion. Homes, churches, and communities come together in a final moment of celebration before everyday routines resume. Food, music, and storytelling play a central role, reinforcing the idea that faith in Goa is deeply interwoven with cultural expression.

What makes the Three Kings Feast especially significant is how it bridges the global and the local. The story of Epiphany remains universal, yet in Goa it finds a voice shaped by geography, history, and collective memory. Through Reis Magos, the biblical journey of the Magi becomes a reflection of Goa’s own traditions—rooted in faith, sustained by community, and passed on through generations.

In a world where traditions often shift or fade, the Feast of the Three Kings stands as a reminder of how belief systems adapt without losing their essence. Whether observed in churches across continents or celebrated in Goan villages through Reis Magos, the day continues to shine as a symbol of guidance, revelation, and shared belonging.

The event featured the Child’s Play Chorus from the Margao branch, comprising over 30 performers led by Vanessa Menezes, whose energetic and heartfelt renditions were warmly received by the audience.

The choir performed a mix of contemporary and traditional pieces, including popular songs such as Eye of the Tiger, Roar, and You’ve Got a Friend in Me, alongside beloved Christmas carols like Hark the Herald and Silent Night. Their confident performances and youthful enthusiasm drew enthusiastic applause and reflected the growing interest in choral singing among children in the region.

The evening also featured Camerata Goa, the foundation’s orchestra conducted by Dr. Luis Dias. The ensemble presented a selection of classical carols including Coventry Carol, What Child Is This, In Dulce Jubilo, and Go Tell It on the Mountain, adding depth and richness to the festive programme. Camerata Goa later went on to perform at the Museum of Christian Art’s Carols on the Hill, followed by the Child’s Play Chorus, further extending the foundation’s presence in Goa’s festive music calendar.

Reflecting on the foundation’s expanding choral initiatives, Dr. Luis Dias shared that choral projects are currently active in Margao and Saligao, with plans to begin a new project in Panjim in the coming year. He highlighted the enthusiasm of both children and parents, noting that the Margao choir has already delivered five performances in recent months. Emphasising inclusivity, he added that the choral projects are open to all and aim to encourage more young people to experience the joy and beauty of singing together.

The New York Goan Association’s annual celebration of the Feast of St Francis Xavier was held on December 7 at St Luke’s Church Hall in Whitestone, New York, bringing together over 130 members of the Goan and Indian community in a vibrant expression of faith, culture and togetherness.

The day began with a well-attended Holy Mass that set a reverent and reflective tone for the celebrations. Following the Mass, members and guests gathered at the Church Hall, which was beautifully decorated by the association’s committee, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.

Guests were welcomed with an array of appetisers including chicken lollipops, vegetable spring rolls, kebabs and haryali chicken. The programme was set in motion by Master of Ceremonies Valerian Rodrigues, who opened the event with the traditional Goan March. New York Goan Association President Abigail Couto then addressed the gathering, thanking sponsors, members and committee volunteers for their dedication. She highlighted the association’s ongoing work in New York and India, noting that proceeds from the raffle baskets would support charitable initiatives in Goa, Mumbai and Nashik, including orphanages, homes for the aged and hospices.

Music and entertainment kept the celebrations lively, with DJ Evette providing foot-tapping tracks alongside live performances. A special highlight for younger members was the arrival of Santa Claus, continuing a cherished tradition that brought joy and excitement to the children. The feast cake was cut amidst the singing of the traditional feast song, adding to the sense of shared heritage.

The audience was also treated to melodious performances by young singing talent Leanne Rodrigues and by Joey, whose songs added a special charm to the afternoon. Lunch featured a generous spread of Goan, Indian and Portuguese cuisine, catered by Spice Symphony, The Order and O Lavrador, complemented by a signature salad prepared by a committee member. Traditional sorpotel, made and sponsored by The Order, was enjoyed with sannas, while the menu also included seafood paella, Peruvian chicken, chana masala, fish curry, lomein and more. Wines for the event were sponsored by the New York Wine Exchange and the Couto family.

The event was coordinated entirely by the New York Goan Association committee, whose members reiterated that keeping the spirit of Goemkarponn alive in New York and bringing families together remains central to the association’s mission. The celebration stood as a reminder that even far from home, Goan traditions, faith and community continue to thrive.
