Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão Calls for Peace, Unity and Protection of Constitutional Values in New Year Message

As the New Year 2026 begins, Archbishop of Goa and Daman, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, has conveyed heartfelt greetings to the people, especially in Goa, praying for God’s abundant blessings, peace within families, harmony among communities, and unity across the State and the nation.

In his New Year message, the Cardinal expressed deep anguish over a growing sense of insecurity among minority communities in the country. Referring to reported attacks on Christians during recent Christmas celebrations in different parts of India, he described these incidents as painful and contrary to the nation’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence and respect for cultural and religious diversity.

Cardinal Ferrão stated that such incidents not only hurt Christian communities but also undermine the moral fabric and sacred values that India has always stood for. He recalled that the Indian Constitution guarantees the free and fair practice of religion, yet pointed out that some communities continue to face persecution for celebrating their important religious festivals.

The Cardinal further observed that such incidents often occur with what he described as tacit approval or inaction by authorities, leading to fear and erosion of public trust. Appealing to authorities at all levels, he urged them to uphold their constitutional responsibility and act decisively and impartially against those responsible for acts of violence or intimidation.

He also made a strong appeal to citizens who believe in harmony, justice, and mutual respect to stand united against divisive forces and actively uphold the unity and integrity of the nation.

Concluding his message, Cardinal Ferrão expressed hope that the New Year would usher in renewed commitment towards peace, fraternity, and constitutional values, enabling all citizens to live with dignity, security, and mutual respect.

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão Inaugurates Silver Jubilee Year at St. Francis Xavier’s Parish, Kaloor, Kerala

St. Francis Xavier’s Parish, Kaloor, in the Archdiocese of Verapoly, Kerala, inaugurated the Silver Jubilee Year of the construction and blessing of its new church on 7 December 2025. The year-long celebrations were opened by Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and Archbishop of Goa and Daman.

This was Cardinal Ferrão’s second visit to the parish, bringing with it a special sense of continuity and blessing. He fondly recalled being present at the blessing of the new church in November 2001, paying heartfelt tribute to the late Archbishop Daniel Acharuprambil and Msgr. Joseph Padiyaramparambil for their leadership and vision that shaped the parish into what it is today.

A Parish Rooted in Faith and Growing in Mission

The Cardinal highlighted the parish’s rich history, which began in 1862 with just 92 families. Today, it is a vibrant community of 6,800 Catholics from 1,680 families, organized into 55 family units.
The parish is home to:

  • A thriving Sunday School with 549 children and 63 dedicated teachers
  • Seven active lay associations
  • A significant ministry supporting migrant Catholic faithful

Located in the heart of Kochi, St. Francis Xavier’s Parish plays a crucial role in welcoming and guiding migrants seeking spiritual support and community life. The Cardinal called this both a grace and responsibility.

Inspired by St. Francis Xavier

Reflecting on the missionary zeal of St. Francis Xavier, Cardinal Ferrão urged the faithful to deepen their love for Jesus and share the Gospel with courage, compassion, and commitment. He reminded the parish of the saint’s enduring legacy, whose relics continue to draw pilgrims to Goa.

A Call to Live the Jubilee With Gratitude and Purpose

Cardinal Ferrão encouraged families, youth, and parish groups to become bearers of Christ’s light in society. He expressed appreciation for Fr. Paulson Simethy, the parish priest, and all parish leaders and volunteers for their service.
He prayed that the Jubilee Year may become a time of renewal, unity, and transformative action.

The solemn Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Rev. Dr. Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI. Fr. Paulson welcomed the dignitaries and presented a memento to the Cardinal.

With the formal declaration of the Silver Jubilee Year, the parish begins a journey of thanksgiving, renewal, and hope, celebrating 25 years of faith and community life.
