India Approves Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

India has officially entered the race to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad named as the proposed host city. On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the bid, describing Ahmedabad as the โ€œidealโ€ venue due to its world-class sporting infrastructure, advanced training facilities, and deep-rooted sporting culture.

The decision follows the Indian Olympic Associationโ€™s nod earlier this month, after an โ€˜Expression of Interestโ€™ was submitted in March. The bid will be formally submitted before the August 31 deadline, with the final decision to be made at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow this November. With Canada exiting the race due to financial constraints, Indiaโ€™s prospects appear brighter.

Ahmedabad boasts the Narendra Modi Stadiumโ€”the largest stadium in the worldโ€”which recently hosted the 2023 ICC World Cup Final. The under-construction Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is also set to play a crucial role, offering an aquatics centre, a football stadium, and multi-sport indoor arenas. The Games are seen as a stepping stone toward Indiaโ€™s larger ambition of hosting the 2036 Olympics, with Ahmedabad again seen as a frontrunner.

Beyond showcasing Indiaโ€™s sporting excellence, the bid has been positioned as a catalyst for economic growth. Hosting the CWG is expected to boost tourism, generate local jobs, and promote sports as a viable career path. The government also anticipates large-scale employment opportunities across event management, media, broadcasting, logistics, and more.

India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010. If successful, the 2030 edition will not only include all major disciplines but also bring back medal-heavy sports like shooting and wrestlingโ€”disciplines removed from the upcoming 2026 Games in Glasgow. The Indian Olympic Association also aims to promote traditional sports such as kabaddi and kho kho, making the event a culturally rich and competitive showcase.

As the nation awaits the final decision, the bid stands as a testament to Indiaโ€™s rising influence in global sports and its readiness to deliver events on an international scale.

India Bids to Host 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad

New Delhi, July 3, 2025 โ€” In a landmark announcement for Indian sports, India has formally proposed Ahmedabad as the countryโ€™s candidate city to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking its most ambitious bid yet to bring the world’s largest sporting spectacle to Indian soil for the first time in history.

The formal presentation was made to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), outlining Indiaโ€™s vision, readiness, and long-term commitment to host a sustainable, inclusive, and transformative edition of the Olympic Games.

Ahmedabad: The Chosen City

Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat and one of Indiaโ€™s fastest-growing urban hubs, has been chosen for its infrastructure potential, connectivity, and the availability of large-scale land for building a centralised Olympic Park.

The proposal includes the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave โ€” a world-class sports complex currently under development โ€” as the central venue. The Enclave is expected to house an Olympic Stadium, Athletes’ Village, aquatics center, and various indoor and outdoor competition venues.

National Vision for a Global Event

Indiaโ€™s bid is not just about sport but also about national pride, economic development, and global engagement. Speaking at the announcement, key officials emphasized Indiaโ€™s growing stature on the world stage and its readiness to host a mega-event that celebrates diversity, unity, and excellence.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), along with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Gujarat state government, has been working closely with international consultants and IOC observers to fine-tune the proposal.

Historical Significance

If successful, the 2036 Olympics would mark the first time India hosts the Olympic Games, adding to its impressive track record of organizing multi-sport events such as the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and numerous world championships across disciplines.

The bid also highlights Indiaโ€™s diverse culture, youth energy, and its commitment to accessibility and Paralympic inclusion.

Whatโ€™s Next?

Indiaโ€™s bid will now go through several rounds of evaluation by the IOCโ€™s Future Host Commission. A final decision is expected by 2026 or 2027, depending on the IOCโ€™s roadmap and competitive bids from other countries.

With its bold vision, legacy planning, and powerful narrative of emerging leadership, Indiaโ€™s Olympic dream is closer than ever before.
