Lorna Cordeiro Turns 81: The Nightingale of Goa and Her Timeless Voice

Written by Tanisha Cardozo

She never screamed for the spotlight.
She just sang — and the world listened.

At 81, Lorna doesn’t just celebrate another birthday. She reminds us that time can fade voices, but not her voice.

She began on beaches, was discovered in whispers, rose through smoke-filled jazz lounges, and paused — for decades. But when she returned, she sang as if nothing had changed. And somehow, nothing had. Her voice still cut through the noise. It still knew how to hurt and heal in equal measure.

Her songs weren’t about polish — they were about power. Raw, honest, Konkani soul.
“Bebdo.” “Nachomia Kumpasar.” “Tuzo Mog.”
Names of songs, yes. But for many, they were entire chapters of life.

She didn’t chase fame.
She lived in music.
And music, in return, made her eternal.

Today, we don’t just wish her. We thank her.
For giving a language a rhythm.
For giving a region a sound.
For giving every broken and dancing heart — a song.

💐 Happy 81st, Lorna.
The Nightingale sings on.

More Than a Thread: The Unbreakable Bond of Brotherhood

Written by Nikita Volvoikar

As Raksha Bandhan approaches, I find myself wrapped in a wave of emotions — love, nostalgia, gratitude. It’s a festival that always reminds me of the special bond I share with my brothers, especially Nikhil, my elder brother, who has been my first friend, partner in crime, and a constant support system.

Ours is what you’d call a Tom and Jerry relationship — filled with squabbles and silly fights, yet rooted in a love that never wavers. Despite all the teasing and disagreements, we’ve always stood up for each other when it mattered most.

Growing up, Nikhil and I shared a deep love for dancing. He would take me to the dance floor at weddings, and together we’d dance the night away. Even today, I miss those moments — especially now that he works away from home. He’s also my trusted secret keeper, and we’ve created memories that I will always hold dear.

One of the things I admire most about him is how he expresses his care — not through grand gestures, but through thoughtful little actions. Whenever he calls home, he always checks in on me:
“Where’s baby? Is she home from work? What is she doing?”
It’s those small things that speak volumes about his love.

Mom once told me that Nikhil used to pray for a sister before I was born — and when I arrived, he was overjoyed. That thought alone fills my heart with warmth. Over the years, our relationship has grown from sibling rivalry to a beautiful friendship built on trust, loyalty, and deep affection.

But Nikhil isn’t the only brother I’m blessed with. I’ve had many brothers — by blood and by bond — who’ve played important roles in my life.

There’s Rahul, with whom I have cherished summer vacation memories. We would spend hours playing and just enjoying the innocence of childhood.
Johnathan — my modern-day partner in crime — our plans are always spontaneous, but somehow, they always work.
Calvin, my little brother, has grown up so fast. Watching him become more independent and confident makes me so proud.
Fabian, Viraj, Rajat, and Vineet — each one has stood by me in different ways, sharing in laughter, festivals, and life’s ups and downs.

From bursting firecrackers during Ganesh Chaturthi to simply being present during key moments, my brothers have always made me feel seen, loved, and protected.

As I look back at these beautiful memories, I realize how truly blessed I am. We’ve had our fights, disagreements, and differences — but what’s endured is our bond, stronger than ever.

So this Raksha Bandhan, I want to say thank you — to Nikhil and all my brothers — for being there, for loving me unconditionally, and for making my life brighter in ways you may never even realize. Happy Raksha Bandhan to all the wonderful brothers and sisters out there. May your bonds continue to grow stronger, and may all broken ties be healed with love.

Grandparents’ Love: A Bond Beyond Time

Written By Nikita Volvoikar

There are all kinds of relationships we build in life—parents, siblings, friends, co-workers—but some are simply irreplaceable. For me, that was the bond I shared with my grandparents. It’s a relationship I still cherish deeply and one that continues to shape who I am.

Growing up with working parents, my brother and I spent most of our time with our grandparents. And while both of us were loved immensely, I won’t deny that I was definitely a little more pampered. They spoiled me—with love, attention, stories, and life lessons.

My Grandpa – My Secret Keeper and Cheerleader

Grandpa, a proud Goan, loved his traditions. I still smile when I remember our quiet adventures—sneaking snacks, watching him enjoy a tiny glass of Urrak in the backyard cottage, and getting caught by Grandma despite our best efforts. He trusted me with his secrets and gave me his unwavering support, even encouraging me to sing in church. The way he looked at me—with pride and love—was everything.

My Grandma – My Superwoman

Grandma was everything: strong yet soft, firm yet incredibly loving. She helped raise me, braid my hair, teach me how to be a responsible, confident woman, and encouraged my passion for cooking. She fed us with stories, comforted us when we were sick, and made sure we were always cared for. Her love wasn’t loud—but it filled every corner of my childhood.

Their Absence, Their Legacy

Watching them grow old broke my heart, and losing them felt like losing a part of myself. Their absence still leaves a void no one can fill. I miss their hands, their hugs, and their voices. But I believe they are watching over me, just as they always did—with love and prayer.

A Message to You

If your grandparents are still with you, treasure them. Listen to them. Hug them more. Forgive them quickly. Their love is a rare kind—pure, selfless, and eternal. And if they’re no longer here, keep praying for them. Because long before you knew yourself, they were praying for you.

Grandparents are a blessing. Love them while you can. Pray for them always.

Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: Remembering the Heroes of the Himalayas

India | July 26, 2025Kargil Vijay Diwas marks the day of India’s triumph in the Kargil War of 1999, a conflict fought against infiltrators in the high-altitude terrain of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kargil district. On this day, we honour the soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who fought with unparalleled courage to defend the nation’s sovereignty.

What Happened in 1999?

In May 1999, Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated Indian territory in Kargil, capturing strategic mountain peaks. Operation Vijay was launched to evict the intruders. After months of fierce fighting under extreme weather and terrain conditions, India recaptured all its posts by July 26, marking a significant military victory.

Why It Matters Today:

Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just about remembering the past — it’s about acknowledging the present-day commitment of our armed forces and the value of national unity, sacrifice, and patriotism. It is a call to citizens to carry forward the ideals our soldiers fought for.

Tributes Across the Country:

From the war memorial in Dras to educational institutions, from social media tributes to parades and wreath-laying ceremonies, the country comes together to salute its heroes.

“Either I will come back after hoisting the Tricolour, or I will come back wrapped in it, but I will come back for sure.”Captain Vikram Batra (PVC)

Let us remember every name, every sacrifice, and live with gratitude.

National Broadcasting Day 2025: Honoring the Voice of India

Every year on July 23, India celebrates National Broadcasting Day to mark the beginning of All India Radio’s (AIR) historic journey in 1927. The day is a tribute to India’s vibrant broadcasting heritage that has played a pivotal role in nation-building, education, and entertainment.

📡 A Legacy That Echoes

The Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) began operations from Bombay (now Mumbai) on July 23, 1927. It was later taken over by the government in 1930 and renamed All India Radio (AIR) in 1936. For decades, AIR remained the primary medium for disseminating news, music, and cultural programming.

From the independence movement to national crises, AIR has been the voice that connected rural and urban India alike. With the emergence of Doordarshan, India’s national television broadcaster, the world of broadcasting expanded to include visual storytelling as well.

🎙️ More Than Just News

AIR and Doordarshan have contributed significantly to:

  • Educating rural communities
  • Promoting classical and regional art forms
  • Broadcasting emergency updates and public health messages
  • Fostering national unity and civic awareness

Even in today’s age of digital news and OTT platforms, radio remains relevant with FM stations and digital streaming gaining popularity.

🎧 A Salute to the Voices

As we mark National Broadcasting Day, we acknowledge the dedication of radio announcers, technicians, producers, and storytellers who made sure that every voice found its listener.

Let us continue to support credible public broadcasting and cherish the sound that shaped our nation.
