Sony Musicโ€™s Shridhar Subramaniam Champions Asiaโ€™s Cultural Diversity at All That Matters

At the All That Matters conference held in Singapore, Shridhar Subramaniam, President of Sony Music Asia and Middle East and Chair of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), delivered an insightful discourse on Asiaโ€™s expanding role in the global music industry. Emphasizing the regionโ€™s vibrant cultural diversity and localized music scenes, he outlined how these elements are rapidly shaping the future of music on a worldwide scale.

Subramaniam pointed to the IFPIโ€™s initiative of launching weekly charts across six Asian countries as a groundbreaking benchmark for measuring success in an extraordinarily diverse region. He likened Asiaโ€™s cultural and linguistic variety to a โ€œstratified Grand Canyon,โ€ where deeper exploration reveals new colors, sounds, and artistic expressions.

One striking example he shared was Indonesiaโ€™s traditional dangdut music, a folk-rooted genre that has been revitalized by urban youth into a modern hybrid called โ€œhipdut.โ€ This fusion of old rhythms and contemporary beats has dominated Indonesian charts throughout the year, prompting Sony Music to invest early with a dedicated label and acquisition strategy. The genreโ€™s trajectory mirrors that of reggaeton, which successfully crossed into Afrobeats and Punjabi music, exemplifying how regional styles can achieve global resonance.

The Philippines, with its Pinoy pop scene, is another burgeoning hotspot. Acts like SB19, inspired partly by the K-pop model but firmly localized, have amassed billions of streams and expanded into new markets like Japan through live tours and collaborations. Subramaniam also noted Thailandโ€™s rising prominence and cross-border collaborations involving Korean, Japanese, and Chinese producers, underscoring the dynamic exchange within Asian music.

Despite the fragmented and competitive nature of the industry, Subramaniam stressed the importance of initial domestic success as a springboard to global breakthroughs. Drawing parallels to K-popโ€™s rise, he acknowledged that fervent home fan bases have been crucial in propelling artists onto the world stage.

With Spotify alone uploading over 135,000 new songs daily, the challenge of artist development has intensified. However, evolving strategies such as fan economies, live touring, and media syncs offer a diverse toolkit to help artists find their unique paths to success.

Looking ahead, Subramaniam remains optimistic about Asiaโ€™s cultural and economic influence in music. From contributing less than 7% to nearly 15% of the global market in recent years, Asia is poised to reach 20%, with hyper-local scenes increasingly shaping global culture through sheer volume and algorithmic power. The dominance of Indian and Latin American acts on platforms like YouTube illustrates this trend, suggesting similar patterns will emerge across other streaming services.

Asiaโ€™s music moment is here, fueled by cultural richness, innovation, and an unyielding drive from artists and fans alike โ€” a phenomenon that Sony Music and Shridhar Subramaniam are proudly championing on the world stage.

5 Seconds of Summer Make Bold Comeback With โ€œNOT OKโ€ and New Album ‘Everyoneโ€™s a Star!’

After a long-awaited hiatus, Australian pop-rock powerhouse 5 Seconds of Summer are back in full force. The band has just released their explosive new single โ€œNOT OK,โ€ marking their first official group release since 2022. Alongside the track, theyโ€™ve announced their sixth studio album Everyoneโ€™s a Star!, set to arrive on November 14 via their new label, Republic Records.

Known for their genre-blending sound and electric performances, 5SOS โ€” comprised of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin โ€” return with music that reflects their growth as individuals and as a band. โ€œNOT OKโ€ is a dark yet anthemic track that taps into emotional vulnerability and inner chaos, wrapped in the bandโ€™s signature high-energy style.

The lyrics โ€” โ€œHey, Iโ€™m not okay / I like the darker side of meโ€ฆโ€ โ€” reveal a raw self-awareness, with Hemmings describing it as a song that celebrates all parts of oneself, even the ones we often hide.

This release comes after years of solo pursuits by each member. Ashton Irwin launched his solo career in 2020 with Superbloom and followed up with Blood on the Drums in 2024. Luke Hemmings shared his introspective debut When Facing the Things We Turn Away From in 2021, followed by the Boy EP in 2024. Calum Hood dropped his debut solo album ORDER chaos ORDER in early 2025, and Michael Clifford released Sidequest that same year.

The new album Everyoneโ€™s a Star! aims to merge that individual experience into a unified sound. โ€œThis band is made of four people who could all have their own solo albumsโ€ฆ [but this] embodies all of that,โ€ Hemmings said in a statement. โ€œWe were teenagers at the beginning of 5 Seconds of Summerโ€ฆ I think this record has more of our original spirit โ€” but with 15 years of wisdom and a dash of reckless abandon.โ€

The album includes 12 tracks, including the already released โ€œNOT OKโ€ and others like โ€œTelephone Busy,โ€ โ€œBoyband,โ€ and โ€œGhost.โ€

To celebrate the release, the band held a free pop-up show at The Sun Rose in West Hollywood, streamed live on TikTok. They performed classics like โ€œYoungblood,โ€ โ€œShe Looks So Perfect,โ€ and โ€œTeeth,โ€ while debuting new material from the upcoming album.

Everyoneโ€™s a Star! is shaping up to be a defining chapter in 5SOSโ€™s legacy โ€” one that honors their roots while pushing boldly into new territory.

Charlie Puth Says He Handwrites Lyrics to ‘See Songs in Colour’ and Bring Them to Life

Charlie Puth may be a tech-savvy music producer, but when it comes to songwriting, he proudly sticks to pen and paper. The 33-year-old hitmaker revealed in a recent interview that he handwrites all of his lyrics using a Bic 4-Color Pen, a simple tool he claims helps him โ€œsee songs in colorโ€ and emotionally connect with them on a deeper level.

โ€œI never type lyrics on my phone or a computer,โ€ Puth told The Hollywood Reporter. โ€œIt just feels like the song isnโ€™t a song if I type itโ€”it needs my personality.โ€ For him, each ink color evokes a different feeling or function: red is used to scratch out bad lines, green highlights the strongest ones, and blue taps into emotional tones. โ€œGreen means go,โ€ he explained, noting that it often marks lyrics that make it into the final cut.

Puthโ€™s creative toolkit is surprisingly minimal. He travels everywhere with his Bic pen, a stack of notebooks, and a compact keyboard. Whether heโ€™s on a plane or backstage before a show, these tools help him feel grounded and expressive. โ€œSometimes I feel like I canโ€™t talk. But if I sit at a keyboard and play while Iโ€™m speaking, the words come easier,โ€ he admitted. โ€œI donโ€™t know whatโ€™s wrong with me.โ€

He also teased that heโ€™s been working on new musicโ€”songs that will reflect how his life has changed over the past decade. โ€œThere will be a lot of things I havenโ€™t sung about yet,โ€ he said. โ€œLife for me is much different than it was 10 years ago when One Call Away or See You Again came out, so thereโ€™s some things to say. And I am constantly inspired by my surroundings, both musically and otherworldly.โ€

Charlie Puthโ€™s process might be analog, but itโ€™s clearly working. In an industry racing toward automation and AI, his dedication to authenticityโ€”right down to the ink he writes withโ€”shows that sometimes, the old ways still hold the most power.
