The Conjuring: Last Rites has officially opened in cinemas and is already causing a stir at the box office. The fourth and possibly final installment in the widely successful horror franchise brought in an impressive $8.5 million during its Thursday night previews in North America. This massive haul has now set a new record for R-rated horror movies in the post-pandemic era, overtaking Nope, which previously held the title with $6.7 million.

Starring the franchise’s stalwart duo Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film also features Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy. Released on September 5, The Conjuring: Last Rites continues the legacy of supernatural investigations and demonic terror that has made the series a fan-favorite.

While critics have been lukewarm, giving the movie a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, audiences have reacted much more positively. The film currently holds a 79% audience score, suggesting that longtime fans of the franchise are responding well to the story and performances.

According to box office projections and industry trackers like Luiz Fernando, the film is on pace to earn between $65 million and $70 million during its three-day opening weekend in North America. This would not only make it the biggest opening for any Conjuring movie but also the top debut for a horror film in 2025 — surpassing the earlier frontrunner, Final Destination: Bloodlines.

With its $8.5 million preview, The Conjuring: Last Rites also lands as the second-highest preview gross for any horror film in the post-COVID era, only behind Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘s $13 million. Historically, it ranks fourth all-time in horror preview earnings, just behind IT ($13.5M), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ($13M), and IT: Chapter Two ($10.5M).

The Jonas Brothers are trading concert stages for snow-covered chaos in their new holiday adventure, A Very Jonas Christmas Movie, coming to Disney+ on November 14.

In their first-ever holiday feature film, Joe, Kevin, and Nick Jonas star as themselves in a heartwarming — and hilariously unpredictable — story about doing whatever it takes to get home for the holidays. After a sold-out show in London, the brothers are determined to make it back to New York in time to spend Christmas with their families. But with a string of escalating misadventures standing in their way, the trip turns into a comical race against time involving stolen rides, snowy detours, and even a tense encounter with a pack of wolves.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Jessica Yu (Breathing Lessons), the film promises both laughs and feel-good moments for viewers of all ages. The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, proudly celebrates yet another international achievement by its alumni as the short fiction film गुंतता हृदय हे (Entangled) continues its inspiring journey across global film festivals. Directed by FTII alumnus Sainath Uskaikar and written and produced by esteemed faculty member and alumnus Dr. Milind Damle, Entangled has been awarded Best Film in the Short Fiction category at the inaugural Celebrating India Film Festival held in Delhi.

This prestigious recognition marks the film’s 11th award, reinforcing its reputation as a cinematic gem within the short film landscape. Entangled has previously won accolades such as Best Cinematography at the Mumbai International Film Festival 2024 (NFDC), Best Film at the 21st Kalpanirjhar International Short Fiction Film Festival in Kolkata 2023, and multiple honors at Paridrishya Short Film Festival in Mysore, including Best Actor Male, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Design. It also secured Best Director and 2nd Best Film at Chitra Bharati Film Festival 2024.

In addition to its award tally, Entangled has been selected for screening at some of the world’s most respected film events, including the Nepal International Film Festival, INPUT Conference in the USA, Jaffna International Film Festival, Signs Film Festival, World Cinema Film Festival, South Asian Short Film Festival, Indian Film Festival of Stuttgart, and the Indo-German Week in Berlin.
