Karan Johar Opens Up About His Late Father Yash Johar: โ€œHe Was My Fan, My Hugger, My Heroโ€

By Allycaral Desk

Filmmaker Karan Johar got candid about his late father, legendary producer Yash Johar, in an emotional conversation with Sania Mirza on her podcast Serving It Up with Sania for Myntra.

Reflecting on his upbringing and the values his father instilled, Karan described Yash Johar as a man of โ€œwealthy characterโ€ โ€” not in money, but in kindness, generosity, and integrity. โ€œHe believed in karma,โ€ Karan said. โ€œHe always told me to give selflessly, to never expect anything in return.โ€

Unlike the often distant father-son relationships, Karan and Yash shared a deep emotional connection. โ€œHe was a hugger and a kisser,โ€ Karan recalled. โ€œEven when I weighed 100 kilos, heโ€™d make me sit on his lap and pinch my cheeks.โ€

Karan fondly remembered how his father celebrated his individuality โ€” even when it went against stereotypes. โ€œHe never cared that I did Kathak. Heโ€™d clap with joy. He was obsessed with me โ€” he refused to see any flaws.โ€

When Kuch Kuch Hota Hai released in 1998, Yash Joharโ€™s pride knew no bounds. โ€œHe thought I was James Cameron overnight,โ€ Karan joked. โ€œHeโ€™d tell people, โ€˜Mera beta director number one hai โ€” Hindustan mein kya, globally!โ€™ I used to feel awkward, but he was my biggest fan.โ€

Yash Johar, who founded Dharma Productions, passed away in 2004, but his legacy continues through his sonโ€™s work and warmth. Karan ended the conversation by saying, โ€œMy father was my moral compass. He taught me that true wealth lies in goodness.โ€
