Learn about The leap day – 29th February – Once in every 4 years!

2024 happens to be a special year as this year tends to have a day that comes only once in four years! This year is the leap year and thus! calculating towards an unusual date on the calendar: February 29. 2024. There are several connotation related to this day – Heres’s what you need to know :

What is a leap year?

A leap year takes place every four years, when an extra day is added to the Gregorian calendar, making the total duration of that year 366 days instead of 365. The extra day is added at the end of the month of February and February 29 is known as leap day.

How are leap days celebrated?

In several parts of the world the leap day is celebrated differently – for example in the Ireland – women are encouraged to propose to their partners on this day, flipping traditional way of men proposing to the lady. While on the other hand, in parts of China, childrenย tend to buy gifts for their parents. In some other counters leap days are popular for the weddings.

Why do leap years exist?

Leap years happen because of a โ€œmismatch between the calendar year and Earthโ€™s orbit,โ€ย according to NASA. While we think of one year as lasting 365 days, it actually takes a little longer โ€” approximately 365 days and 6 hours โ€” for the Earth to orbit the sun. That extra quarter of a day has to go somewhere, so around every four years, we add 24 hours โ€” or four times six hours โ€” to the calendar.

As The Washington Post reported, leap days are what keep our seasons and our calendars in sync โ€” which, in turn, makes it possible for farmers to grow crops and for humans to celebrate religious and other holidays around the same time each year. Shauna Edson, an astronomy educator at the National Air and Space Museum, previously told The Post that without them, our calendars would be ahead of the Earthโ€™s orbit by a day every four years, amounting to 24 days each century. This means that, slowly but surely, our seasons and solstices would occur at vastly different times than we are used to. โ€œAt first, we might not notice,โ€ Edson said. โ€œBut there eventually would be a time that weโ€™d be celebrating the Fourth of July and itโ€™d be snowing.โ€Why do we have leap years? Without them, Halloween would be in the spring.

Who came up with leap day?

According to the National Geographic, the mismatch between human calendars and the orbit of the Earth and the sun caused โ€œchaosโ€ for centuries, leading ancient societies in Egypt and China, and later the Roman Empire, to come up with workarounds. But nothing quite worked โ€” untilย Pope Gregory XIII implementedย the Gregorian calendar and its leap-year system.

Not everyone uses the Gregorian calendar, and some cultures have come up with different ways to account for the extra time it takes the Earth to orbit the sun. Theย Hebrew calendar, for example, has an extra month on certain years within a 19-year period, to ensure that religious holidays align with solar seasons.

Why do leap years take place (almost) every four years?

While leap years typically happen every four years, there are exceptions. (For those who want the math, thatโ€™s because it actually takes aboutย 365.2422ย days, not 365.25, for the Earth to orbit the sun โ€” so by adding an extra day every four years, we are adding slightly more time than needed to align a complete orbit with the length of a calendar year.) According to theย National Air and Space Museum, if we added a leap day every four years, we would โ€œactually make the calendar longer by over 44 minutes. Over time, these extra 44+ minutes would also cause the seasons to drift in our calendar.โ€

Instead, the museum explains, โ€œthe rule is that if the year is divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400, leap year is skipped.โ€ For example, the year 1900 โ€” which is divisible by 100 but not by 400 โ€” was skipped, but the year 2000 was not. The next time we will skip a leap year will be in 2100.

What happens if you were born on a leap day?

If you were born on a leap day, fear not โ€” you do not enter a magical time-warp, and you still get to celebrate your birthday each year. โ€œLeaplings,โ€ as babies born on Feb. 29 are sometimes known, can simply choose celebrate their birthday on March 1 on non-leap years.

Goa today witnessed a spell of unexpected rain late in the evening. The rains began pouring in right after the sunset. Several people going home unexpectedly got a shower just when no one expected it.

This morning the weather looked a little dull. Clouds covered the sky and everyone felt that it would definitely pour in but not now maybe later in the evening. Amidst this many people thought it wouldnโ€™t rain and everyone would reach home without getting wet in the rain and hey! I was one among them.

Just when you feel it wouldnโ€™t rain , it poured in and unexpectedly several experienced the shower. The very fact that it was unexpected made me think just like that universe has a plan and it unfolds ahead of you in the most unexpected way. Things, situations, people come in your life to add just what your life requires. And in due course of time you realise that it is these things that matter the most. Unexpected things happen in life but it is up to you how to stay true to what you feel. Cherish the presence and during the absence learn to realise the worth. Everything and every moment is special. Perspective matters the most.

I was talking to a friend as the unexpected rain poured in, one said it maybe someone crying from above in the form of rain while another one said maybe itโ€™s some showers of blessing. And that made me think, every body and every thing has a different perspective. The approach to things makes the difference. Stay happy and be grateful and that will surely reciprocates in some way or the other.
