Pope Leo XIV has appointed Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India and Archbishop of Goa and Daman, as one of the members of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication

In a significant development for the Catholic Church in India, Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão has been appointed as a member of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication by Pope Leo XIV. The appointment marks a moment of pride for Goa and the Indian Catholic community, as it strengthens the country’s representation in the Church’s global communication framework.

Cardinal Ferrão, who currently serves as the President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and Archbishop of Goa and Daman, will now contribute to the Vatican body responsible for overseeing and guiding the Church’s communication strategy worldwide. The Dicastery for Communication plays a crucial role in shaping how the Church engages with the global audience through media, digital platforms, and official messaging.

This appointment reflects the Vatican’s recognition of Cardinal Ferrão’s leadership, experience, and commitment to effective communication within the Church. His role will involve collaborating with other members of the dicastery to enhance transparency, outreach, and engagement in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.

The inclusion of an Indian representative in such a key Vatican institution is seen as a significant step in amplifying voices from diverse regions, particularly from countries like India where the Catholic community continues to play an active role in social and spiritual life.

Cardinal Ferrão’s appointment is expected to further strengthen ties between the Vatican and the Indian Church, while also bringing valuable perspectives from Goa—a region with a rich Catholic heritage—to the global stage.
