Goa’s IM Ethan Vaz Wins Silver at National U-17 Chess Championship

In a remarkable achievement for Goa, Ethan Vaz delivered an outstanding performance to secure the silver medal at the 35th National Under-17 Open Chess Championship 2025-26 held in Ahmedabad from March 30 to April 7, 2026.

The 14-year-old International Master showcased exceptional consistency and skill, finishing the tournament undefeated with an impressive 9 points from 11 rounds. His performance included seven wins and four draws, underlining his dominance and strategic brilliance against top young players from across the country.

With this podium finish, Ethan has earned the honour of representing India at the upcoming World Youth and Asian Youth Chess Championships in 2026, where he will compete in the Under-18 category. This achievement further strengthens his growing reputation as one of India’s most promising young chess talents.

Ethan’s success comes on the back of another major milestone earlier this year, when he clinched gold at the National Junior (Under-19) Open Chess Championship in December. That victory secured his place in the World Junior and Asian Junior Chess Championships in the Under-20 category for 2026.

Notably, Ethan, who is among the youngest International Masters in India, now holds the rare distinction of being selected to represent the country in both Youth (Under-18) and Junior (Under-20) categories across major international events, including World, Commonwealth, and Asian Chess Championships.

His achievement marks a proud moment for Goa’s sporting community and highlights the rising prominence of chess talent emerging from the state. With his dedication, composure, and consistent performances, Ethan Vaz continues to inspire young athletes and chess enthusiasts across India.
