Chennai Super Kings will be without their iconic leader MS Dhoni for the initial phase of the Indian Premier League 2026, as the veteran continues rehabilitation for a calf strain.
The franchise confirmed in an official statement that Dhoni is likely to miss the first two weeks of the tournament, dealing a significant early setback ahead of their opening clash against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. The update comes just days before the start of the much-anticipated IPL season, which kicks off on March 28.
While the team has not provided a definite timeline for Dhoni’s return, his absence could see him miss at least four matches, including fixtures against Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals.
In Dhoni’s absence, all eyes will be on Sanju Samson, who is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties after being roped in via a trade. Meanwhile, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad will have the responsibility of leading the side during this crucial opening stretch.
The development has also reignited discussions around Dhoni’s future in the league. Having featured in every IPL season since its inception, alongside stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Dhoni remains one of the most enduring figures in the tournament’s history.
If he takes the field later this season, Dhoni is set to become the oldest Indian player to feature in the IPL, surpassing Praveen Tambe. His role, however, has been under scrutiny in recent seasons, especially with fluctuating batting positions and evolving team dynamics.
Last season, Dhoni played all 14 matches, scoring 196 runs at a strike rate of over 135. He also briefly resumed captaincy duties after Gaikwad was sidelined due to injury.
As CSK begin their campaign without their talisman, the focus will be on how the team adapts in his absence and whether the transition phase signals the beginning of a new era for the five-time champions.
