Goa Union of Journalists Mourns Passing of Veteran Photojournalist Satish Kunkalkar

The Goa Union of Journalists has expressed profound grief over the passing of senior photojournalist and its member Satish Kunkalkar, who breathed his last on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital.

Kunkalkar was 52 and is survived by his wife and two sons. His demise marks a significant loss to Goaโ€™s journalism fraternity, where he was widely respected for his dedication, versatility, and passion for storytelling through both words and images.

Born on January 12, 1974, Kunkalkar began his journey in journalism at a remarkably young age while still in Class 10. He started as a correspondent from Cumbarjua for multiple publications, including Dainik Sakal, Pudhari, Navprabha, Gomantak, and Goan Varta. In addition to reporting, he would capture his own photographs, demonstrating an early flair for visual journalism.

His sharp news sense and strong writing skills caught the attention of Avinash Vengurlekar, then editor of Tarun Bharat, who offered him a full-time position as a correspondent. Kunkalkar seized the opportunity and went on to build a distinguished career.

During his tenure at Tarun Bharat, he further honed his photography skills under the mentorship of veteran photojournalist Umesh Banastarkar. He later moved to Panaji, where he covered key events across the state and established himself as a prominent photojournalist, while also contributing as a correspondent and sub-editor.

Over the years, Kunkalkar reported on several major events, including the International Film Festival of India, the Lusofonia Games, large-scale cultural concerts, floods, protests, rallies, and legislative assembly sessions. His work was widely appreciated, earning him recognition and honours from various organisations.

The Goa Union of Journalists paid tribute to Kunkalkarโ€™s immense contribution to journalism, remembering him as a committed professional who upheld the values of truth, dedication, and integrity throughout his career. His legacy will continue to inspire aspiring journalists and photojournalists across the state.
