Goa Union of Journalists Hosts ‘Understanding Mhadei’ Workshop in Sattari

The Goa Union of Journalists successfully conducted its third workshop titled ‘Understanding Mhadei’ under the ‘GUJ Workshop Series’ in Sattari, aiming to deepen awareness among journalists about one of Goa’s most vital natural resources.

The workshop featured noted environmentalist, educationist, writer and social activist Rajendra Kerkar as the resource person, who provided valuable insights into the ecological and cultural importance of the Mhadei river. He explained why the river is often referred to as Goa’s lifeline and highlighted the need for its conservation.

Participants were also guided by young volunteers Samrudhdi Kerkar, Arushi Gaonkar, and Suman Varandekar, who assisted in facilitating the sessions and field visits. As part of the workshop, attendees visited key locations including the Padeli bridge, Movacho Guno at Caranzol, and Nirankarachi Rai at Maloli. These field visits offered participants a hands-on understanding of the river’s ecosystem and the challenges it faces.

The workshop, held as part of a bimonthly initiative, was exclusively designed for GUJ members and their families. A total of 33 participants attended, including 19 members and 14 family members, reflecting enthusiastic participation and engagement.

During the closing ceremony, all participants were presented with certificates. GUJ President Rajtilak Naik welcomed the gathering, while executive committee member Marcus Mergulhao introduced the resource person and volunteers. The vote of thanks was delivered by Loukik Shilkar, and the closing ceremony was compered by Pradnya Rane.

The ‘GUJ Workshop Series’ has been initiated by the Goa Union of Journalists to sensitise its members on critical issues related to journalism and society. Through such initiatives, the organisation continues to promote informed reporting and a deeper understanding of environmental and social concerns among media professionals.
