New Floodlights at Goa Cricket Association Ground Boost Night Cricket in Goa

The Goa Cricket Association (GCA) marked a significant step in strengthening cricket infrastructure in the state with the inauguration of new floodlights at its ground in Porvorim on Friday.

Installed at a cost of ₹4 crore, the floodlights meet international standards, including those required for high-profile tournaments such as the Indian Premier League. The lighting system delivers an intensity of 2,500 lux, ensuring optimal visibility for players and supporting high-quality match telecasts.

Former GCA President Chetan Dessai stated that the new installation will allow players to train during evening hours, offering greater flexibility and improving overall preparation. The development is also expected to help local players adapt better to modern formats of the game, including One Day and T20 matches, which are increasingly played under lights in domestic competitions such as the Ranji Trophy.

The initiative forms part of GCA’s broader vision to promote cricket at the grassroots level. The association has already established 20 cricket centres across Goa, aimed at nurturing young talent and providing structured opportunities for aspiring players.

Dessai further highlighted ongoing plans to enhance player support systems, including the development of a state-of-the-art physiotherapy centre and a modern gymnasium. He noted that while previous committees laid the foundation, the current management has accelerated efforts to upgrade infrastructure.

Adding to the discussion, Vinod Phadke, President of the Goa Veterans Cricket Association, pointed out that cricket activity in Goa slows during the monsoon season, affecting player development. To address this, the association plans to send young cricketers to other states during the off-season to ensure consistent match exposure. He emphasised that ideally, players should participate in 100 to 150 matches annually to refine their skills.

The inauguration event also featured a special moment as noted Bollywood singer Shabbir Kumar rendered the national anthem ahead of a friendly match between the President’s XI and Secretary’s XI.

GCA President Mahesh Dessai and Secretary Tulshidas Shetye were among the dignitaries present at the event, which marks a key milestone in Goa’s journey towards becoming a stronger hub for cricket development.
