The Goa Football Development Council reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young girls through football during a special International Women’s Day event held at Our Lady of the Rosary School in Dona Paula.
The celebration, organised by the Dona Paula centre of GFDC, brought together key stakeholders including Chairman Glenn Ticlo, Member Secretary Fransquinha Oliveira, school authorities, and other dignitaries to mark the occasion and encourage greater participation of girls in football.
Addressing the gathering, Ticlo highlighted the growing achievements of women across various sectors and emphasised the importance of equal opportunities in sports. He noted that since taking over as Chairman, he aims to strengthen the organisation’s network of 36 centres with the support of Pramod Sawant and Ramesh Tawadkar. He stressed the need for improved infrastructure and quality coaching facilities for both boys and girls, ensuring that talent is nurtured across the state.
Ticlo also acknowledged the increasing recognition of women in fields such as academics, culture, and sports, pointing out that women athletes, including those in cricket, are gaining equal respect and opportunities. He called for continued governmental support to further enhance facilities and create an enabling environment for young athletes.
Member Secretary Oliveira echoed these sentiments, highlighting GFDC’s dedication to creating inclusive opportunities for girls to engage in football. She praised the enthusiasm and determination of the 33 girls currently training at the Dona Paula centre, describing them as a testament to the growing popularity of the sport among young girls in Goa.
Encouraging the trainees to remain focused and confident, Oliveira emphasised that football not only builds physical skills but also instils qualities such as teamwork, resilience, and self-belief. She urged the young players to continue pursuing their dreams and to see football as a pathway to personal growth and achievement.
She also commended the Dona Paula centre’s strong track record, noting its success as a three-time winner of the GFDC inter-centre tournament and its current position as a semi-finalist. The efforts of coaches Leena and Centre Head Carol Gomes were recognised for their role in developing talent and creating opportunities for aspiring players.
Oliveira further acknowledged the vital support of parents, describing their encouragement as a cornerstone of each player’s success. The event concluded with a renewed commitment from GFDC to continue promoting football among young girls and strengthening pathways for women’s participation in sports across Goa.
