encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday evening.
The match began with both sides evenly matched, as they battled for control in midfield while struggling to create clear-cut chances. FC Goa enjoyed spells of possession during the opening half but were unable to significantly trouble the Punjab FC goalkeeper. The contest remained tight, with neither side managing to establish a clear advantage.
Punjab FC broke the deadlock just before halftime when Nsungusi Effiong produced a moment of quality, curling his effort into the net to give the hosts the lead heading into the interval.
Looking to respond, FC Goa head coach Manolo Márquez made early changes in the second half, introducing Abdul Rabeeh and Raynier Fernandes to inject urgency into the attack. The substitutions quickly shifted momentum as the Gaurs began the second half with increased intensity.
The match took a decisive turn when Effiong was shown a straight red card for a headbutt on Pol Moreno, reducing Punjab FC to ten men and giving FC Goa a crucial numerical advantage.
The Gaurs capitalised soon after. In the 53rd minute, Raynier Fernandes delivered a perfectly weighted through ball to Brison Fernandes, who turned and set it up for Dejan Drazic. The Serbian forward finished clinically with the outside of his boot, bringing FC Goa level with a composed strike.
With momentum firmly on their side and an extra man advantage, FC Goa pushed forward in search of a winner. Drazic remained a constant threat in the attacking third, while Brison Fernandes came close late in the game with a sharp volley. Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, Punjab FC’s defence held firm to ensure both teams shared the points.
The result sees FC Goa take a point away from home while maintaining their unbeaten run. However, they will view the draw as a missed opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders. The Gaurs will now turn their focus to their upcoming away fixture against Chennaiyin FC next Sunday.
