Mattel has announced the launch of its first Barbie Dream Team in celebration of International Women’s Day, an initiative recognising women who have made significant contributions in their respective fields. Representing India in this global line-up is Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana.
Mandhana becomes the first cricketer to be honoured with a one-of-a-kind doll created in her likeness, commemorating her achievements on and off the field. This exclusive doll is a tribute to her journey and will not be available for retail purchase.
Smriti Mandhana has played a pivotal role in raising the profile of women’s cricket in India, becoming the first Indian woman cricketer to score centuries in all three international formats – Test, ODI, and T20 – marking a historic milestone for the sport.
Historically, women cricketers in India have had limited visibility and opportunities. Mandhana’s recognition through the Barbie Dream Team highlights the growing momentum of women’s cricket and aims to inspire young girls to pursue sports as a career.
Commenting on the honour, Smriti Mandhana, vice-captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, said that being part of a global group of inspiring women is a special moment. She emphasised that while representing India on the field is meaningful, inspiring young girls to follow their passions is equally significant.
Nathan Baynard, vice president and head of Barbie at Mattel, stated that the brand has long championed the idea that girls can aspire to any profession. He added that the Barbie Dream Team celebrates trailblazing women and seeks to inspire girls worldwide to pursue their ambitions.
