A large-scale awareness programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was held at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium in Bambolim, bringing together policymakers, youth, civil society representatives, and citizens in a collective commitment to combat drug abuse.
Organised by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Government of Goa, the event marked five years of the nationwide campaign with the theme โNasha Mukt Bharat, Khushhaal Bharat.โ The programme underscored the importance of community-driven efforts in addressing substance abuse and strengthening the social fabric.
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Virendra Kumar, described the initiative as more than just a campaign, calling it a peopleโs movement aimed at safeguarding youth and reinforcing families and communities. He highlighted the role of coordinated action involving governments, educational institutions, law enforcement agencies, NGOs, and volunteers in tackling drug abuse effectively. He also administered a pledge against drug abuse, urging citizens to remain vigilant and proactive.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant reaffirmed the stateโs commitment to the mission, emphasizing the need for sustained awareness, community participation, and accessible rehabilitation systems. He cautioned against casual experimentation with drugs, noting that it often leads to addiction, and encouraged parents to seek timely support from de-addiction centres. He also highlighted the efforts of law enforcement agencies in monitoring drug-related activities and curbing the illegal trade.
The Chief Minister further linked the campaign to the broader national vision of a developed India by 2047, stating that a drug-free society is essential to achieving this goal. He expressed confidence that Goa will play a significant role in this mission, with an aim to achieve a drug-free state in the coming years.
Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai and senior officials from both central and state governments were also present at the event, reinforcing institutional support for the initiative.
The programme featured cultural performances, including a traditional Dekhni dance and a street play, both highlighting the harmful impact of drug abuse and the importance of collective action. Individuals who have contributed to the campaign, including recovered users, volunteers, and competition winners, were felicitated for their efforts.
Earlier in the day, a youth rally was organised to spread awareness and mobilise public participation, further strengthening the campaignโs message of unity and shared responsibility.
The event reflected a growing nationwide resolve to address substance abuse through awareness, prevention, and community engagement, positioning the campaign as a key pillar in building a healthier and more resilient society.
