Chennai: Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, has filed a petition seeking divorce, bringing an end to their 27-year marriage. The couple tied the knot in August 1999 and have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha.
The petition has been filed under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, citing grounds of adultery and cruelty.
According to the petition, Sangeetha, 48, alleged that she discovered in 2021 that Vijay, 51, was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor. She claimed that despite assurances from Vijay that the relationship would end, it allegedly continued.
The petition further states that Vijay excluded her from his social and professional life and continued to travel abroad and attend public events with the said actor. It also alleges that photographs of these outings were regularly shared on social media, which reportedly caused humiliation to her and their children.
Additionally, Sangeetha has claimed that Vijay withdrew certain facilities previously available to her and imposed financial restrictions, including limiting her free movement.
Describing the marriage as having effectively ceased to exist, she stated that it now survives only on paper and is incapable of revival. The petition asserts that the alleged conduct caused her mental agony, indignity and suffering.
Further legal proceedings in the matter are awaited.
