Southwest Monsoon Likely to Begin Withdrawal from September 15: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon is expected to begin its withdrawal from parts of northwest India around September 15. This marks the seasonal retreat after an eventful start to this year’s monsoon.

🌧️ Typical Monsoon Cycle
Traditionally, the monsoon sets in over Kerala on June 1, covers the entire country by July 8, and starts its retreat around September 17, usually completing the process by October 15.

This Year’s Exception
In 2025, the monsoon defied norms:

  • It arrived in Kerala on May 24, the earliest onset since 2009.
  • It covered the entire country by June 30, the quickest progress since 2020.

🌦️ IMD Statement
“Conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from some areas of west Rajasthan around September 15,” the IMD said in its latest weather bulletin.

🌱 Impact & Significance
The withdrawal of the monsoon is a crucial phase for agriculture, water resource management, and climate monitoring in India. It signals the end of the rainy season and sets the stage for the post-monsoon and winter crop cycles.

As India watches the retreat of the monsoon, the season will be remembered not only for its early onset and rapid spread, but also for its role in replenishing reservoirs, aiding crop sowing, and influencing weather patterns across the country.
