SRL Concludes Workforce Engagement at Surla Mines After Exhausting All Options

Panaji, July 27, 2025 – SESA Resources Limited (SRL) has formally ended its engagement with the workforce at its former Surla mining site, following a difficult yet necessary decision after all avenues of support were explored.

Mining activities at the Surla site were halted in 2018 after a directive from the Hon’ble Supreme Court, yet SRL continued to financially support its workforce for over seven years — a testament to the company’s longstanding commitment to its employees.

In recent developments, the mining leases once held by SRL have been awarded to other companies through the State-led auction process. This transition not only marked a shift in ownership but removed SRL’s operational control and legal capacity to maintain any workforce at the site.

Recognizing the inevitable, SRL rolled out a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) to assist its employees with financial relief and time to seek alternative employment. 19 workers availed of this scheme.

With no opportunity for redeployment within SRL, the company has officially concluded its ties with 84 workers, following all necessary legal and regulatory protocols. All mandated dues have been cleared, affirming SRL’s adherence to statutory obligations and corporate responsibility.

SRL, in a statement, expressed its appreciation and respect for its workforce and reaffirmed its commitment to being a responsible corporate entity, promising to continue contributing meaningfully to the communities it has long served.
