Govt Bans Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix for Streaming Soft Porn Content in Violation of IT Rules

New Delhi | July 25, 2025 — In a sweeping digital crackdown, the Government of India has officially banned several OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT (formerly ALT Balaji), Desiflix, and others, for allegedly streaming soft pornographic content in violation of IT Rules 2021.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), acting on multiple public complaints and regulatory findings, took action citing concerns over content that undermines public morality, decency, and social order.

Officials noted that these platforms exploited regulatory loopholes and misused the freedom offered to OTT content creators to distribute explicit adult material under the label of “bold” or “uncensored” content.

“The decision has been made to protect youth and vulnerable audiences from exposure to unethical content. Content streaming in India must respect cultural and legal boundaries,” an official source stated.

The ban is expected to trigger deeper scrutiny of smaller OTT platforms, many of which operate without strong content oversight or parental controls.

📌 What This Means:

  • Platforms must now undergo stricter compliance under IT Rules.
  • A content certification framework for OTTs may be introduced.
  • Discussions around creative freedom vs. content ethics will intensify.
