Canada Sets Cap on Study Permit Applications for 2025

In a move aimed at controlling the influx of temporary residents, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced a cap on study permit applications for 2025. Starting January 22, the cap limits the number of new study permit applications accepted for processing to 505,162.

What Does the Cap Mean?

The cap applies specifically to new study permit applications, but certain applicants are exempt. These include students renewing their study permits at the same Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and level of study, as well as those with special circumstances such as an unenforceable removal order or a temporary resident permit.

Key Facts to Know

  • The cap is for applications accepted for processing, not the number of study permits that will be approved in 2025.
  • The limit is set at 505,162 applications for the remainder of the year.
  • Exempt applicants include those renewing their study permits under certain conditions and those with special circumstances.

Impact on International Students

The cap may impact international students planning to study in Canada in 2025. However, it’s essential to note that the cap is aimed at managing the influx of temporary residents and does not necessarily mean that fewer study permits will be approved.
